Democrats blast Cheney secrecy after shooting

Democrats in Congress accused Vice President Dick Cheney of a pattern of secrecy, and demanded that he "level" with the public, after keeping mum about accidentally shooting an associate over the weekend.

Cheney has been criticized for waiting a day before disclosing a hunting mishap Saturday in which he shot his 78-year-old hunting companion, Harry Whittington, in the neck, chest, and face.

Asked at a press conference for her reaction about how the White House has handled the incident, US Senator Hillary Clinton called the Bush administration's failure to be more forthcoming "troubling."

"A tendency of this administration -- from the top all the way to the bottom -- is to withhold information ... to refuse to be forthcoming about information that is of significance and relevance to the jobs that all of you do, and the interests of the American people," Clinton said.

"Putting it all together, going back years now, there's a pattern and it's a pattern that should be troubling," she said at a press conference calling for a more robust federal response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

The former first lady continued: "The refusal of this administration to level with the American people on matters large and small is very disturbing, because it goes counter to the way our constitutional democracy ... is supposed to work."

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid at a press conference Tuesday said the secretive tendency goes beyond Cheney, pervading the entire Bush White House.

"I think the reason it took the vice president a day to talk about this is part of the secretive nature of this administration," the top Senate Democrat said. "They keep things pretty close to the chest."

Hillary knows a thing or two about withholding information and refusing to be forthcoming. Is she projecting?

God the D's are idiots.

At first as the MSM made jackasses of themselves, I thought at least the Dems aren't stupid enough to jump into this one.
Right on cue the morons try to make a hunting accident a political event. They have no idea how bad this looks in the red states.

What in the hell has happened to the Democratic party? Can they fall any lower? We're probably going to find out.

The first priority was to get Whittington to the hospital not provide information for the national press corps. He was flown by helicopter to Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi. The press corps is upset that no one in the various law enforcement agencies, emergency services, or hospital personnel involved, informed the national press. Too bad.

Tonight, on a low rated, non Fox cable show the host and guests are basically accusing Cheney of attempted murder and subsequent cover up,
being under the influence of drugs or alcohol ( the 14 hour delay )
and world class arrogance for not speed dialing David Gregory before dialing 911.
If this had happened on Sept 11, 2001, it would have knocked the planes into the WTC- off the front page.

Hillary's statement is really funny stuff.. We are STILL waiting, after 4-1/2 years, for Hillary Clinton to make a statement or issue a press release about the Airport Security Guard she ordered run over by her limo shortly after 9/11. When she finally stops refusing to "Withhold Information" about this incident and the guards medical treatment and how he was forced to retire due to the medical injuries incurred because of her ignorance of security procedures, then I will actually listen to what she has to say on this subject...

Pay no attention to the fact that most of the time spent "hiding" the information was overnight, Reid, when you say it "took a day." Or that most Americans would understand if the Veep and his staff said they wanted to give the friends the overnight time to gird themselves for the onslaught of idiots - Connie - who would descend on them when word got out. Something like this could easily wait until the AM.

Senator Reid, you disgust me.

Huh? What a hypocrite but that is nothing new with the loony libs.

Could someone please tell me how this accident was relevant or significant to me or anyone else besides the people involved? I can't figure out how it is even any of my business! It is nothing more than gossip for the masses and rags.

Considering how the press treats the POTUS and the VP.....I wouldn't blame them for not telling them...

The press act as if...they are PART of government...for crying out loud.

Yes, that's it!

The dumb press is covering their rears because not one of them was covering the VP. Not one.

Whittington was taken directly to the hospital, the local police were promptly (within 10 minutes, I've heard) notified. Somehow Cheney was supposed to pick up the phone and call the press corps.

Look at the evolution of this story. First it was "Cheney was negligent, he should have had the ESP to know that the man was somewhere there." Now it's "Cheney was trying to keep this a secret."

Just remember, the press is the story here. Why does none of them decide it is worth it to cover the Vice President?
