Thanks!

Arkansas Connections

VIRGINIA KELLY, Clinton's mother (1923-1994) - Hot Springs was so different. We had wide-open gambling, for one thing, and it was so wide open that it never occurred to me that it was illegal - it really didn't - until it came to a vote about whether we were going to legalize gambling or not. I never was so shocked.

Roger Morris interview

There's an effort to clean it up later in the mid 1960s after Owney Madden dies, but in many respects it only goes underground. So for most of the time that Bill Clinton is a little boy, growing up in Hot Springs, Arkansas, this is an organized crime capital, in America. Really unlike any other in, in quality, in content. And, the striking thing about all of this is that he is not divorced from it. That his own family is quite intimately involved in it. His mother as we know from her own memoirs, frequented the track at Oaklawn, which was one of the centers of activity for the mob and was an almost nightly visitor to the clubs of Hot Springs. The Vapors being her favorite. And all of these clubs were fronts, you passed through a wonderful curtain discreetly put up, between the restaurant or whatever was out front, and into a gambling parlor that was befitting Hot Springs at its height and looked like Las Vegas or Reno or, the casinos of Europe, with roulette, with blackjack, with slot machines and all the rest. She frequented all of those with her husband, then Bill Clinton's stepfather, and Roger Clinton. He's very much a product of all of that.

SNIP

So Virginia is the parent. She's the dominant adult force and she's a very mixed bag indeed. She's something of a tart around Hot Springs. As I said earlier, she's always there at the nightclubs, she's frequenting the race track, she's rather addictive, a race track gambler, not a high roller but always there at the two dollar window.

Jacob Arvey was also a big name in the mob-Democrats tie in Chicago. And Congressman William Dawson was used to distribute bribe money:

Figuring Out The Players

Most importantly what they learned was that Gus Alex, who had come into the organization as a bodyguard to Jake Guzak, was the outfit's controller over Congressman William L. Dawson. Alex and Dawson were so close, in fact, that Alex had a gambling pallor set up across the street from Dawson's home district office.

It was due to their control over Dawson that the outfit was able to control the Black Ghettos that they flooded with drugs, crap games, whorehouses and loan sharks.

Dawson was the absolute ruler over all the Black second ward and recognized spokesman for Chicago's black population. In Washington Dawson headed up the powerful House Committee on Expenditures and in Chicago he was known as Cook Counties Democratic machine patronage dispenser.

Well it is only ONE of the MANY exceptions to your theory. There are the costs of murder, assaults, theft on a huge scale, encouragement and feeding of appetites of highly dubious safety. The Sopranos gives a good illustration of some of the huge costs of organized crime through Union looting, contract padding to pay off the boys, looting of the public treasury via mob fraud.

It ain't a society out to do good for ANYONE but a tiny crew.

LOL--actually I owe *you* the thanks, my friend: I found that after your post by searching on the clue you gave me about Virginia :-) I had heard some things along those lines about Clinton's family but not that specific detail about Virginia, so you gave me a very valuable piece of info there! I've also read some things about J. William Fulbright's family being tied into that stuff in an earlier period--bootlegging era through about the 1940s, something involving a family ice business, IIRC.

Excuse me for asking, but WTF are you talking about?

I'm deluded? Did you ever owe back taxes to a state or federal agency?

Your attempt to compare elected representative government to a criminal conspiracy is delusional.

Glad to have been of use. Occassionally something of value pops out of that teeming brain of mine to justify all the other bullsh!t.

I know Fulbright's family was involved in ownership of a regional newpaper out of Fayetteville.

Being from Arkansas originally I attended the same Boys State which Clinton used to go meet JFK. His claimed home town, Hope, used to beat the crap out of my high school every year. How typical that even the title of his "autobiography", The Boy from Hope, is a complete fraud.

Please leave Frank Sinatra out of it. His only connection (to the mob) was likely that he was Italian American. What you are suggesting is way worse than racial profiling, it's racist. We were discriminated against too, you know. Remember Protestants United for the Separation of Church and State?

This is dangerous ground you're treading, for Italian Americans, he's still quite an idol. Hands off!

In the book by Frank's valet, George Jacob, in the chapter "Gangland," he tells of Frank's relationship with Mr Big, Sam Giancana.

One day Giancana related to Jacobs how he became the mob's boss of bosses.

Seems Sam was in a Terra Haute prison in the 40's with a Black guy who went on to became king of the numbers racket in Chicago....one of the few ways Blacks could get rich in those days.

The two connected and became partners, but as the world turned, Sam took over the games (nor saying how) but he was nice enough to setup the Black guy in Mexico for the rest of his life.

Ah, The Supranos are fiction. What, do I get to use Edgar G. Robinson?

Criminals go where the money and the power to make, take and keep money. There is no way you are going to have a subset of people called "government" and not have the mob take them over. World wide mob and government are one and the same. When the supposed protector of the people, the government can take, make, break it's supposed masters the people, it much of a transition.

The mob also says it exists to protect the people, and in fact does do service. Organized crime history is replete with them providing services. To be blunt if you run a business in say little Italy, and you have problems with black gangs. No more black gangs. Go to the police and they say wait until you are robed, shot, broke in, then file a report, then we, then maybe a court case...bla,bla,bla. Hence in many older East coast cities, black/minority gangs, do not often just cross a street to exand their criminal operations. Mind you the city police and court systems are present over both neighborhoods, but for some mysterious reason the crimials will, or less so, cross literaly a street to the richer pickings. Wonder why?

There is much truth in fiction. What is completely true about the Sopranos is the methods it illustrates the mobsters use to destroy legitimate businesses and defraud others and the public.

In fact, the very people which the mob started out fleecing were the Italians immigrants who were too poor to utilize the legal system. It did not help them unless helping them helped the mobster.

Your analysis of government is equally idiotic and false when comprehensible. Just more lunatic raving.

I think I'd heard that. I read his biography by Randall Bennett Woods a while back, which is where I got the other information from, and I think he mentions that, though I'm not 100% sure. LOL on Clinton lying about the high school football thing--typical Clinton :-)

Sounds like the Chicago numbers guy he's talking about is Ed Jones:

In the late 1930’s, Chicago mobster Anthony Giancana, past member of the 42 Gang and leader of the emerging Taylor Street faction of the Outfit, was sentenced to four years in the federal penitentiary at Terre Haute, Indiana for operating an illegal whisky still.152 There, Giancana met “Big” Ed Jones who was serving time for income tax evasion. Jones reportedly told Giancana about the vast sums of money that he had made in the policy racket. Released from Terre Haute in 1942, Giancana began making plans for the Outfit’s eventual takeover of the policy racket. . .Ed Jones and his brother George moved toMexico and left the policy racket to Theodore “Teddy” Roe, their partner in the Maine-Idaho-Ohio wheel.

BTW Giancana wasn't really the Boss of Bosses: that was Carlo Gambino. But he was promoted to Accardo's underboss as a result of the Jones incident you describe, which might be what you're thinking of ("He was made Underboss to Tony Accardo as a reward for the Eddie Jones affair.": http://www.crimelibrary.com/gangsters_outlaws/mob_bosses/giancana/up_5.html).

LOL......"moved" to Mexico?

According to Jacobs, who did not name names, Jones did not move to Mexico willingly. It took a lot of (ahem) muscle and gore for Giancana to oust Jones and take over the operation.

The Big Boys wanted Jones whacked but Sam saved his life. Jacobs quoting Giancana on his generosity in setting Jones up in a Mexican villa: "A lifetime of the s***s is still a lifetime."
