The Dick Cheney shooting incident will, in a way, go away. And, in a way, not--ever. Some things stick. Gerry Ford had physically stumbled only once or twice in public when he became, officially, The Stumbler. Mr. Ford's stumbles seemed to underscore a certain lack of sure-footedness in his early policies and other decisions. The same with Jimmy Carter and the Killer Rabbit. At the time Mr. Carter told the story of a wild rabbit attacking his boat he had already come to be seen by half the country as weak and unlucky. Even bunnies took him on. Same with Dick Cheney. He's been painted as the dark force of the administration, and now there's a mental picture to go with the reputation. Pull! Sorry, Harry! Pull!

Columns like this are a sterling example of why our man Ron hired Peggy to write the speeches, and other people to give policy advice.
This lead in looks cribbed from another editorial I read on FR yesterday. Something saying that Dick Cheney was now incapable of leading because he had become a laughing stock.
The left is hoping for the death of this man (by heart attack?) on the fantasy belief that VP Cheney would be prosecuted for his death.
They take glee in the misery of others. And they still contend that they support the troops?
Peggy has morphed into a female Bob Novak. Neither one can help taking shots at the administration while still taking cover behind the Republican blind.
Great post - I was just trying to say something like that when my daughters turned up with a dispute, and by the time I sorted that out, you'd said it better!
Very well put. She is far too much in love with the sound of her own words.
I don't know about the rest of you but I'm pretty tired of the "go hunting with Chaney" jokes. It wasn't funny the first thousand times I heard it.
I am so glad the Dims are spending endless time, effort and energy on this...reporting on reporting...thinking up jokes...posting like crazy. Because in a week this will all be forgotten and they will have missed the boat on several meaningful issues. David Gregory is a great example.
Why in the world should he have contacted the press after the shooting? Give Harry's family some peace and quiet before the onslaught of the press.
Come on Peggy... what's more important, the family's right to privacy, or the media's right to know?
So they could start palpitating and carrying on more quickly?
Seriously, Mr. Cheney's failure to inform the press just makes me respect him more. He is the best V.P. in my lifetime, and fortunately, President Bush seems to realize what an asset he is.
After watching Olympic re-runs last night I checked in on Letterman and Leno. Letterman did bitter jokes about the V.P. but Leno to his credit mentioned nary a word about Cheney.
I agree.
It's not like he drove a girl into a lake drowning her while he himself escaped, and then going back to a party, having a good nights sleep, and THEN telling the authorities!!!!
Or was his first call to the NYTimes or Boston Globe? I can't remember.
She's morphed into something...
Hey, I'm a Peggy fan. She can write, but I am also a woman, so as long as I don't have to watch her doing that "perpetual ingenue" thingy, (pausing, looking up, running her fingers thru her hair, throaty chuckle) I can visit her words without distraction.
How many things can an ingenue know before an ingenue knows nothing new? I think this is just inside the beltway stuff. Not one of her finest efforts. But I suppose this is how the crowd she runs with thinks. That's not a surprise.
Peggy Noonan's 1990 memoir of the Reagan years, What I Saw at the Revolution, was a mellow, even touching account. But her columns lately show the frustration of an outsider, an increasing bitterness at her irrelevance. Surely not a day goes by that she doesn't wonder why she isn't as indispensible to W as she was to President Reagan. I wonder if it isn't time for Peggy to hit the Refresh button herself.
This thought has probably already been posted, but I think it's very telling on how the liberals play the "privacy" card when it comes to things like abortion, (homo)sexual or other sexual deviant issues, ect...but scream "their right to know" when it comes to someone's medical condition the minute it happens.
And if they dare say it's "out of concern" they are full of bovine poop.
