MEXICO CITY – Mexican broadcaster TV Azteca SA said Thursday it has been granted a license to transmit its flagship Channel 13 signal in Canada.

In a news release, Azteca said Channel 13 will be made available to pay-television subscribers across Canada. It is expected to start in April.

TV Azteca, Mexico's No. 2 broadcaster behind Grupo Televisa SA, said Canada's Spanish-speaking population is estimated at 500,000, with more than half that concentrated in four cities.

TV Azteca's U.S. network, Azteca America, had 43 affiliate stations at the end of last year, reaching 80 percent of U.S. Hispanics.

One more thing--Aztecs remind me of the line in Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar" in which Esther is informed that her blind date is Peruvian, and she snaps, "They're squat. They're ugly as Aztecs."
