Saddam Translator: ABC Re-interpreted Tapes
NewsMax ^ | 2/17/06

The FBI translator who supplied the 12-hours of Saddam Hussein audiotapes excerpted by ABC's "Nightline" Wednesday night now says the network discarded his translations and went with a less threatening version of the Iraqi dictator's comments.

"What you heard on ABC News was their translation," former U.N. weapons inspector Bill Tierney told ABC Radio's Sean Hannity on Thursday.

"They came up with something different on a key element regarding terrorism in the United States," Tierney insisted.

In the "Nightline" version of a 1996 recording, Saddam predicts that Washington, D.C. would be hit by terrorists. But he adds that Iraq would have nothing to do with the attack.

Tierney says, however, that what Saddam actually said was much more sinister. "He was discussing his intent to use chemical weapons against the United States and use proxies so it could not be traced back to Iraq," he told Hannity.

In a passage not used by "Nightline," Tierney says Saddam declares: "Terrorism is coming . . . . In the future there will be terrorism with weapons of mass destruction. What if we consider this technique, with smuggling?"

Tierney's full translations are set for release this weekend by The Intelligence Group in Washington, D.C.

"He was discussing his intent to use chemical weapons against the United States and use proxies so it could not be traced back to Iraq,"

I thought that was obvious -- even with the ABC mis-translation.

Don't know what to make of this Tierney guy, but undisputed on the tapes is talk of moving WMD related objects to another country. What country? Why isn't there interest in that?

Well the tapes are going to be available to everyone soon so anyone can translate them. Pretty stupid of ABC.

To quote ABC: "More Americans get their news from ABC than any other source..."

I suspect that bragging right came from ABC Radio news combined with tv figures.

Sean Hannity had the FBI translator on his radion program yesterday backing this story up. Very troubling.

Saddam - "What if we consider this technique, with smuggling?"

Any more news on the huge Tiujana tunnel recently discovered? Earlier I had heard/read rumors that it was feared nukes/dirty bombs were smuggled through it.

Nothing substantiated though....

Wonder if Michelle Malkin has read this yet? This ought to be covered by every Conservative blog site and bring national attention to the treason of the MSM.

Wonder who in the authority line kept this info tucked under? Heard the man in person the night after it was first aired on Nightline et al. He sounded upright to me and was exceedingly careful not to stretch beyond the words used while interpreting the mien of the voice, intent and phraseology in accordance with normal usage of the language.

He translated into english using the Saddam/Iraqi type inflections that he heard that give added comprehension to what was quoted.

The bare words, "I could kill you" can mean something very different if said with a "smile" in the voice as opposed to being voiced with anger or with "meaningful lingering pauses", varied emphasis or "cunning speculation" in the voice.

I'd trust his interpretation before I would trust ABC's or that of the Baath loyalists. He has taken a risk to do this and that first night he seemed genuinely perplexed as to why someone sat on this thing when he felt it could bring clarity to a lot of the media madness.

I listened to this on Hannity yesterday. Bill Tierney has a very good story to tell, but jack*ss Hannity wouldn't let him because they were interfering with Sean's commerical breaks, Sean's need to hear himself speak, and "man on the street" interviews. I was so mad I changed the station.

Is it true that Cheney was using depleted uranium pellets in a shotgun given to him by Jack Abramoff?

And, like Larry O'Donnell, you aren't making any accusations, just asking the question.

Boy, the MSM still hasn't figured out that they can't bury stuff this way anymore. They keep trying their old tricks but the new media is now there to call them out every time. I think this and Ronald Reagan are the most significant developements on behalf of conservatism in my lifetime. 10 to 15 years ago Nightline would have gotten away with this and the tapes would have been swept under the rug. Same with the fake CBS document regarding Bush's Nat. Guard service. I sure am glad I'm here to see it. I sure wish my Dad (a good conservative and wonderful person) was here to see it because he would have been quite happy.

I was a tad busy, so I didn't catch the quote, but I think Tierney was claiming that at one point on the tapes, Saddam and friends were planning on possibly placing blame for a bio attack on Fort Detrich...

Did anyone, seriously, expect anything less from ABC? Is there any thinking person out there who really believes there were no WMDs? Shows like Nightline, 20/20, 60 Minutes, etc., have been proven time after time to be snow jobs or shoddy reporting at best. In reality, they are hit pieces intended to sway public opinion to the left and have nothing to to with "investigative reporting".

Did ABC report that "while there was discussion of sponsorship for terorrist acts, Saddam had left the room for those portions of the discussion citing a bathroom break from drinking too much iced tea"?

"To quote ABC: "More Americans get their news from ABC than any other source..."

How about... "More terrorists conceal the news through ABC News than any other source."

oh wait...I think Al Jazeera has that one copyrighted.
