Hyderabad: Violence erupted in several parts of the Andhra Pradesh capital Friday during protests by Muslims against the caricatures of Prophet Mohammed, leaving at least 10 people injured.
Two people were seriously injured in stone throwing even as the protesters ransacked 10 shops and damaged or set on fire dozens of vehicles at Charminar, Murgi Chowk, Chatrinaka, Darussalam, Mehdipatnam and Vijaynagar.
The violence, which began at the historic Charminar in the old quarters of the city, spread to other areas late in the afternoon.
Tension mounted when some traders, whose shops were damaged by the protesters, joined a rally led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in Charminar to demand action against the culprits.
Police said the situation was tense but under control. Additional police forces, including personnel of the paramilitary Rapid Action Force (RAF) - which specialises in dealing with sectarian violence - were sent to sensitive areas.
Hundreds of Muslims came out on the streets in various parts of the city to protest the blasphemous cartoons immediately after Friday prayers.
Burning the flag of Denmark - where the cartoons were first published - they shouted slogans against Europe and America and clashed with the police.
Buses of the state-owned Road Transport Corporation and private vehicles became the targets of stone-throwing mobs at Charminar and Mehdipatnam.
Trouble broke out at 1 p.m. near the Charminar monument when Muslim youths coming out of Makkah Masjid took out a rally without police permission. Holding green flags and shouting slogans like "Allah-o-Akbar" (god is great) and "Death to Denmark", hundreds of youth marched towards Charminar.
Policemen deployed at the Charminar allowed agitators to continue their protest.
When they reached Gulzar Houz, a busy commercial area, some protesters allegedly threw stones and attacked shops belonging to the Hindus. One car was damaged and a two-wheeler was set ablaze.
Police then swung into action, caning the protesters. Four demonstrators were injured. Though the mob dispersed into nearby lanes, the residents of the area protested what they called the failure of the police to prevent violence.
Police have arrested 10 people, including Ghouse, a corporator of Charminar area belonging to the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), the powerful Muslim political party.
The arrest led to strong protests by MIM leader and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, who said police had arrested Ghouse although he was trying to control the mob.
MIM had announced plans to hold a protest at Makkah Masjid after the Friday prayers. MIM leaders said they had not given a call for taking out a rally but some youths came out on the streets immediately after prayers.
Owaisi and others addressed the protest, warning that Muslims would not tolerate "blasphemous acts like drawing of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed".
Earlier, the national flag of Denmark was laid on the road from Charminar to Makkah Masjid, and people coming for prayers trampled on it to lodge their protest.

I am glad it's not America that is once again the target of international hate, but I am sad this spirit of jihad is set loose on yet another country.
I understand that after World War II when the British left India, the partition of India and Pakistan involved tremendous slaughter on both sides. The figure 6 to 12 million comes to mind. Does anyone have the facts?
When Gengis Kahn rampaged through China and then the Middle East he also engaged in horendous slaughter. I saw a figure for north China of 40 million killed to make room for Mongol livestock. Don't remember where. There were also millions killed in Central Asia including Iran.

Good point. Where was the horde of Jihad-O-Holics when hostages were being slaughtered by Islamic serial killers - on TV no less?
