. . potential terrorists . .

A little strong, don't you think?

Or are you expecting that with the sale of P&O -- a British company that hired mostly Americans -- they will be replacing everyone at six container ports with A-rabs?

Yes, I did read the article. And I was taken with the Hong Kong system as you were. But that has to do with security, and the subject we were discussing is a contract for container movement. Our Coast Guard has the responsibility for security, and that's a totally different subject.

We haven't subcontracted security, but if the Coast Guard can learn something from the Chinese, that's good.

But it has nothing to do with this contract.

This deal is DOA.

Yesterday I wasn't so sure but now no doubt about it, it's DOA. This story has taken off like a rocket and the Republicans are getting pounded over it. No way will they let it go through.

You ought to be ashamed of yourself, expressing coherent thoughts on a thread such as this one.

I know. Indignation is more satisfying than knowledge to many people. I guess I march to a different drummer.

It's all but done. The British gov't and the stockholders all approve. The US can't do anything about it.

Yes. They can. And you know it. It's been posted repeatedly.

As soon as I heard conservative radio screaming over this deal, I knew it was over. That was around 6pm today here.

No I don't. Bribery, intimidation and paid hits are very common in that part of the world and it's not a stretch to think terrorists might easily worm their way into port operations at some point.

I'll bet you the rent money the deal isn't getting US approval.

It doesn't matter. The US can't prevent a British co. from selling out to another co. The most the US can do is find a way to cancel the contracts. And then, what? Close the ports????

It's not "running the ports", "port security", or any of the other buzz phrases that scare you

What you need are some facts.

DP World to invest in port security

DUBAI — DP World, currently in a huge buying spree, is planning to invest in security issues at the ports and terminals it owns and manages around the world, according to a senior company official.

Mahmood Amin, head of security department at DP World, said yesterday that the company was planning to invest in security issues at its ports and terminals in the future, adding that DP World is investing “millions of dirhams” in security every year.

He said while Dubai ports are secure and have not witnessed any cases related to terrorism or any other crimes, the new additions to the DP World’s portfolio will require more cash injections.

Thank goodness for conservative radio, they're all over the illegal immigration issue too and that's helped keep amnesty from getting through.

It's been posted repeatedly by people who are spitting into the wind. Where is the cite that says the US can prevent a British Co. from selling out to another co. of any nationality at all? The US has no jurisdiction at all.

Shutting down the ports is hardly a solution.

Whatever arrangements will have to be made to keep the ports running I'm sure they'll find them but the Arabs will not be taking over, you can count on it.

Fine, and maybe what they do can be helpful. But that doesn't change the fact that US ports are run by local Port Authorities, and security for shipping ports is the responsibility of the Coast Guard.

That's always been the way, and none of it has changed.

The US has no jurisdiction at all.

Every deal that includes a foreign investor has to pass CIFUS and then the Pres. Without their approval there is no deal on US soil.

Then, by all means, contact your Senators and Congressmen and demand that the FAA deny landing privileges to . . let's see . . Egyptair, Emirates, Kuwait Airways, Royal Jordanian, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Uzbekistan Air -- whatever national airline might transport terrorists to our country.

We need to lower the odds, raise the threshold, lift that bale, tote that barge, etc. Fight that WOT to WIN!!!

Read the definition of demagogy linked from post #54, see if you think it fits and then tell me what Hillary, Chuckie Shumer and Reaganwuzthebest have in common.

Um I'm not the one acting naive. You clearly have no understanding of American politics if you believe this deal is going through as is. Maybe you're from a foreign country yourself so let me clue you in: the GOP is not going to let the democrats have an issue to beat them over the head with next November as they're currently doing. The deal is DOA, get over it.
