Northern Spotted Owl Demography
PROB Conservation Science ^ | Feb 2006

Posted on 02/20/2006 9:37:12 PM PST by restornu

Project Location: Marin County, California: Point Reyes National Seashore, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Marin Municipal Water District, and Marin County Open Space District.

Project Summary

The Northern Spotted Owl is the well-known symbol of the controversy over the effects of logging. The Marin County population of this federally threatened sub-species in one of the densest even though it is located at the southern limit of the range. Much of the local forest was logged 50-100 ago and is now re-growing in permanent public ownership. Although logging is not a threat to this population, other human activities such as development, noise disturbance and pesticide poisoning do impact these birds.

Our current research project addresses these human threats by locating and monitoring nests and promptly communicating these results to local land managers. USFWS rules require that land management activities do not harm or harass owls or their habitat. Our data have resulted in better placement of new trails, timing of road and trail maintenance activities (mowing and grading) around nesting season, seasonal closure of shooting ranges near nesting owls, preservation of individual nest trees, and determination of owl activity centers to help with responsible placement of housing sites. Our habitat analysis has broadened concept of "potential habitat" locally and expanded where protections are applied.

Over the past 5 years we have color-banded almost 100 owls in our study area. These individuals have been followed from fledging, through dispersal, and are then monitored annually for nesting activity and the number of young they produce. This subset of the potentially isolated Marin population will provide us with an idea of how well this population is sustaining itself.

Recently we have implemented a woodrat density study. We are examining the density of rat houses across several different habitat types in order to assess what impacts fuel reduction activities will have on this favored prey of local owls. We are planning a meeting for this winter to bring together USFWS representatives with local planners and fire personnel, public land managers, powerline maintenance workers, local tree companies and environmental consultants in order to distribute our findings and update decision makers on the existence of this population and the regulations which protect them.

Those working on the 16 year product said their premise was wrong...

They said should have been trying to prove that logging did not effect the population of the Spotted Owl!

The report came out Sat 02/1/06 heard this on the John Batchlor show!

Of course our caring Media Yelling at Chaney failed to report this!

Got to love it when Rush asked if the spotted owls committed suicide when the tree they lived in was cut down? PC Science didn`t save the owls but it sure killed a lot of jobs, small towns, and dreams. In the meantime, we got environmental lawyers. Lucky us.

One of the mysteries of black holes is how they do not behave "intuitively."

Nice looking critter. How do they fare against Eagles and larger owls?

The barred owl is fond of the tasty spotted owl and is suspected of being the primary predator of said owls, not the logging industry, which up to now, has received most of the blame. I believe the latest edition of Outdoor Life or Field and Stream carries such a report.

That point was discussed on the Batchlor show how junk science effects elections and givis us bad law!

The Northern Spotted Owl is the well-known symbol of the controversy over the effects of logging. (bold added for clarification)

The word symbol says it all. Not fact - but a symbol of how all logging could be stopped.

So when all the trees are saved and the recycled fiber is used, how are you going to wipe your butt and blow your nose?

Ah, so what should we call those we have in Washington? Olympic Mountain Spotted owls? I much rather use the real term, "Anti-Logger Spotted owls".

I learned how to "whistle up" owls from Laidlaw Williams on a Christmas bird count in the Carmel CA area in the late 50s. He wanted a Saw Whet Owl on his list, drove to a location where he knew they lived, gave the appropriate call, et voila.

I can still recognize and make the call, and occasionally hear and draw one in at my northwest rainforest home. As it happens, owls aren't all that bright, and I sometimes get a response from a local Barred Owl.

A family friend who did demographic studies on Spotted Owls as a graduate student in Northern California around 1980 found the Spotted Owls even dumber. He got responses by blowing the horn on his pickup.

Conclusion? Spotted Owls may be dying out because of stupidity.

First of all, the words smart and guts in the same sentence with senator is an oxymoron. And I agree, judges had the "fix" in with the bird.

I worked for a state senator in 1987 during the height of the bird issues (Wash State). He fought the bird, greeners AND the industry.

What was amazing to me was how the forest products industry did not work together - only for their own motives.

Divide and conquer became the tactic of liberal legislators and tree huggers. We "lost" as a result.
