At DePaul, queer studies finds a niche
Chicago Tribune ^ | February 20, 2006 | Jodi S. Cohen

College student Eric Oliver sits in the classroom's front row, ready to learn about Italian poet Dante and Catholic theologian St. Thomas Aquinas and their views on morality and sin.

But this isn't a religion, philosophy or literature class. It's an introductory course in queer studies, and for the next 90 minutes, Oliver and his classmates study the history of same-sex desire, the biology of gender identity and government reactions to homosexual behavior. It is no longer remarkable that the subjects are taught, but on this day, it is notable where the discussion is taking place.

The classroom is on the campus of DePaul University, the country's largest Catholic university and, it is believed, the first Catholic school to offer an undergraduate minor in queer studies. The minor became available in January.

A minor in "queer studies" is it? Geezy-peezy, another step taken toward the slippery slope of no return.

Where's the Church in all of this?

I, at least, hope that they study the prevalent nature of queer culture in the Catholic Church.

Catholics and the Anglicans seem to be a bit confused.

You have got to be kidding me. Queer studies !? Ya know I don't care where it's being taught, but c'mon! Can you see the resume ? Major in philosophy and minor in queer studies. O yea. Think deep (queer) thoughts about being unemployed. And then there'll be the lawsuits. They didn't hire me because I minored in queer. I mean... wow. Just damn. Just can't make this stuff up. Un-believable.

One wonders for what sort of employment a major in Gay Studies is suited. Besides, of course, teaching Gay Studies to the next useless generation.

And I wonder why there are no American-owned companies that can run our ports. The future does not look good.

It's like black studies or womans' studies. For government work, it looks good on your resume', right next to your sociology degree.

Halliburton could do it, but imagine the revolt by the anti-Americans here in the US. AlQaeda is preferable to Halliburton they would have us believe.

"Where's the Church in all of this?"

Not meaning to besmirch the church, but good luck on getting a "straight" answer.

"Queer" Studies? Refer to your gay office-mate as "queer" and see what happens. The beautifil liberal single-edged sword of hypocricy.

Yeah, I know. The Church has got more angles than the Pentagon. And that's a lot!

Imagine telling your folks that you are minoring in "queer studies." Mama Mia! If my kid told me that, I'd ask him for my money back - now!

The sad part of this all is that people who hold such degrees (If they get any jobs at all outside academia) will only be employable in government bureaucracies where they will wield inordinate power over the people who actually do useful stuff.
