Churchill, Hitler and Newt
Pittsburgh Live ^ | February 20, 2006 | Patrick J. Buchanan

You can always tell when the War Party wants a new war. They will invariably trot out the Argumentum ad Hitlerum.

Before the 1991 Gulf War, Saddam had become "the Hitler of Arabia," though he had only conquered a sandbox half the size of Denmark. Milosevic then became the "Hitler of the Balkans," though he had lost Slovenia, Croatia and Macedonia, was struggling to hold Bosnia and Kosovo, and had defeated no one.

Who is Pat Buchanon?

He's not the guy who turned himself blue eating too much kelated silver is he?

...a little learning can be a dangerous thing...

Indeed, it can, Pat. Perhaps you should think twice before lecturing a history professor on history.

Arrogant fool.

As I understand it, Pat thinks WWII was none of our business either.

IMHO this makes him incapable of judging a serious national threat when it kicks him in the teeth.

I don't think Pat is really this stupid or ignorant of recent history. So it's sad to think he stretches the truth this far to fit his world view.

"Who is Pat Buchanon? "

Well he is right about the Hitler comparisons - when somebody compares to Nazis and he's not talking historically about Stalin or Mao then I automatically supsect that whatever argument he is making is not well founded.

I've even heard liberals coming out and supporting bombing Iran's nuclear facilities.

Pat, you're a sludge brain. You've gone off the deep end. You're the one who needs some "facts."

Only when they need toilet paper, and they're fresh out of korans.

Milosevic then became the "Hitler of the Balkans," though he had lost Slovenia, Croatia and Macedonia, was struggling to hold Bosnia and Kosovo, and had defeated no one.

That was strictly Clinton's war, conducted to cover his sorry a** and divert public attention.

If PB doesn't care that a lunatic like Ahmedinejad has nukes, he's further gone than I thought.

What is revealing is that Newt is so willing to go to war when we have not even concluded the war in Iraq. Buchanan makes a good case when he points out that Iran is currently not a real threat to the U.S.and if they ever made a move against us,they would face virtual annihilation. I agree also that Iran's leader cannot be compared to Hitler. Some patience on our part may result in a change in Iranian leadership. I personally don't think that this guy will be able to stay in power for very long. Opposition is building against him. By attacking him, we would play into his hands. He wants us to take out the nuclear facilities so he can solidify his nation against the U.S. This is how he will maintain his power. We should not take the bait.

And if we were not intimidated by a USSR with thousands of nuclear warheads targeted on us, why should Ahmadinejad cause Newt to break out in cold sweats at night?

Too complex for Pat to fathom I guess.

Pat, the Soviets were not eager to incinerate themselves in the glory of their religion!

The Soviets oppressed religion.

Newt is not in power to go to war. Newt is testing the waters for a run at the GOP nomination.

I wholeheartedly disagree with you regarding Iran and its leader.

In 1942, Hitler's armies dominated Europe from the Pyrenees to the Urals. Ahmadinejad is the president of a nation whose air and naval forces would be toasted in hours by the United States.

The point is you don't wait until your "Hitler" is an existential threat to bring him down. By waiting until Hitler "dominated Europe from the Pyrenees to the Urals" we had to endure a war that killed 50 million people. Is that really Buchanan's advice?

Ahmadinejad apparently does not yet have nuclear weapons. But he has expressed his intent to have them and use them. Does Buchanan recommend waiting until he does have them? And then do, what?

Well the soviets had their own religeon - the state. But they certainly didn't want it incinerated. The soviets/russians are very calculated, logical, reasoning people.

I find Iranians just a *bit* less for each of these categories.
