Allstate would have fired him for writing a pro-gay column. Their in-house counsel probably saw the company's name was identified along with the story and said, "get rid of him." Most companies don't want their name associated with the after-hours writing of their employees.
Barber did not associate Allstate with his writings in any way.
The gay activists named Allstate as his employer and used that with great success to have him fired for not supporting the gay agenda.
