Will he or won't he?
Will Ed Thompson, the popular brother of former Gov. Tommy Thompson, run for Congress?
Some Libertarians are trying to persuade Ed Thompson to give it a try. They have analyzed the vote counts from his race for governor in 2002 and say that his strongest performance was in the 3rd Congressional District in southwestern Wisconsin.
Thompson got 10.4 percent of the vote statewide, despite an enormous financial disadvantage. But in the huge 3rd District, where he lives in a relatively central location, it was more like 18 percent.
However, Thompson, reached at his Mr. Ed's Tee Pee Supper Club in Tomah, said he's not planning on it. At this time.
"It's not true. As of right now, I'm not going to," Thompson said.
"I am meeting with some people who are trying to convince me it would be a good idea. It would take a lot of convincing. That doesn't mean I wouldn't, but the best way to bet would be no."
Thompson said he is immersed in running - and expanding - his business.
"That's taking a lot of time," he said.
Thompson also is serving in an elected office at present - the Tomah City Council. He was elected by a write-in vote without even running for the office.
"But Tomah is a lot different from the 3rd District," he said.
Nevertheless, if he were to seek office again, Congress would be the goal, Thompson said.
"That is the one spot that does interest me, the House. I think there is so much corruption, and I am so sick of the federal government taking our money and going to war. I don't think we're getting good representation from either party. We're so entrenched in the two-party system that we need another voice. I am truly disillusioned with government - period."
As for the 3rd District, Thompson pointed out that Rep. Ron Kind, D-La Crosse, is "a very popular congressman."
"It might be fun to run, but I like him," Thompson said. "That doesn't mean I like the system."
Ed's a real character. He'd give us an interesting campaign, that's for sure. ;)
"Ed Thompson for Congress" Ping! Anyone have any Ed Thompson stories to share?
Yeah, this worked out so well for us the last time he ran. If he runs, I'm done with this state; it'll hand the governorship back over to Doyle. Ed Thompson has done enough damage to this state. He needs to stay at the teepee.
Gee! I thought that was about the only think that it spends money on that is actually Constitutional...
Out of curiousity, does anyone know what the margin of victory was in that election race and how much of a differance Ed Thompson played?
He'll only run if he can scuttle a Republican. If Kind was in trouble and Ed could take 4 - 6 points from the GOP...
Why would he want to run as an LP candidate?
Scott McCallum had all the charm and personality of a rusty nail.
Stay the hell out of WI politics Ed you are incompetent and nothing but a liberal's pet spoiler
imo
When it comes down to it, little 'l' libertarians are allies of conservatives, and these groups must unite...this coming from an economic libertarian. I wouldn't mind a libertarian in congress, just as long as he's not blantantly 'dogmatic' in big 'L' Libertarian thought.
So you vote based on personality and end up with Doyle.
Not a member of Mensa I'm guessing ....
Well, we have quality republican candidates this time and Ed is not welcome.
Well if Ed runs, I won't vote for him because of that. Milwaukee County executive Scott Walker is running and he'll definetly get my support (Hopefully, country-clubber Mark Green will get out of the race and support Walker) If Ed runs for Congress I can't vote for him anyway because he's not in my Congressional district.
"Scott McCallum had all the charm and personality of a rusty nail."
I agree, but I held my nose and voted for him, anyway. I can't stand Doyle in any way, shape or form (in case you haven't notced yet, LOL!)
