My women friends and I used to feel pretty secure being in Dubai, because we used to believe the Dubai mantra The city that cares and we hear repeatedly government officials touting the low crime rate.
All that flew out the window when this Dubai court doled out a sentence of two year imprisonment for gang rape! We are all truly outraged! What a sham!
Even as Dubai claimed itself to be socially progressive in many ways, we had not for a minute thought it would be so far behind in its policies and protection of crimes against women.
This two year slap on the wrist is as bad as the horrendous crime itself of premeditated group aggression against one defenceless woman. Think of the emotional and psychological scarring borne by the victim.
Our collective hearts go out to her, and we want her to know we are all in her corner to demand proper justice, and we include our spouses and all women and men friends alike.
We have no expectation of a Saudi Arabian punishment, but we do expect Dubai to do better in its deterrent message. Show us HOW you care!
L S, Dubai
Is there something fundamentally wrong with the punishment of rapists in Dubai? How can a gang rape justify such a light sentence?
If ANY nationality commits rape in Europe, Australia, NZ, SA, US etc, then the punishment fits the crime regardless of whether you are a 'local'. We would be looking at a minimum of ten years for such an assault.
If Dubai needs tourism, and it cares obsessively about its reputation overseas, then why not do something about it? Most tourists will be coming from Europe and if the papers over there start to report incidents like this, then it may tarnish the reputation of Dubai being a 'safe' place to come on holiday.
This crime was committed by young people who should have known better. But maybe the system failed in the sense that they didn't see rape as a serious crime... a crime that if perpetrated should carry a long jail sentence.
The girl was young, fairly new to Dubai and in a 'tourist hotspot', a place you think would be 'safe'. This will have scarred her for life.....and all
the others we never get to hear about.

It made me feel physically sick to read the article on the sentencing of the men involved in the gang rape.
I was told about this rape when it happened (Dubai is a small place after all) as I recall it was last September which mean this young woman has had to endure five months of hell trying to get justice for what happened to her and it is little wonder that she stormed out of the courts after the hearing.
I understand the victim had only been in Dubai for a few weeks when this despicable crime took place and the strength and courage it must have taken for her to seek justice in a place she hardly knew after all she had been through is unbelievable, what a terrible shame the justice system let her down so badly.
I wonder what kind of message this sends out to these men? That you and two car loads of your friends can cruise around the streets looking for a victim and when you find that victim one car load of you can intimidate and heckle her so much that she gratefully accepts a lift from a second, presumed unrelated car and then you can drive her out to the middle of nowhere and all proceed to rape and beat her and then if you do get caught most of you will get off due to "insufficient evidence" and the remaining few will be sentenced to two years....
Does that sound like justice to you?
Michelle Shepheard, Dubai
Just the kind of people we want to manage our ports, wouldn't you say? (/bitter sarcasm)
Kinda reminds me of the guy who got a few months for molesting a kid, that was in an Arabian country, too--oh, wait, no that was in the US...
You're the biggest trop shill I think I've ever seen.
Do we have a story, a link or some such?
I see one of my exes has been talking... ;)
(Yawn)
That's "news"??
"News" would be: Arab/Muslim honored for displaying compassion to infidel. Sedates infidel before sawing off head.
Is this what these arguments against the deal have sunk to? Apparently so.
Long on emotional hissy fit, totally devoid of facts.
Who was the victim?
What was she doing in Dubai?
Is she local or a foreigner?
Is she muslim or infidel?
Or did I miss something and failed to learn that Dubai is the latest tropical vacation hot spot?
I'm surprised they didn't find her guilty of causing a rape and stone her to death.
If even a brief summary of the purported crime can't be posted, the Story isn't worth reading.
Be assured I think rapists should get life/no parole if not death. What I am saying is that you are reaching here.
Hold on now... Who was applauding al-Qaeda terrorism the other day and calling for more?
When they destroy other trop items, I don't mind whatsoever.
So you are effectively an al-Qaeda supporter.
If they hate Clinton as well, does that make me an AQ supporter?
The same thing happens in Aruba and the perps get no jail time.
When you openly state that you support al-Qaeda terrorism in some instances - then, by definition, you are an al-Qaeda supporter.
There is no room in our national policy for saying some al-Qaeda attacks are okay, and some aren't. The policy is very clear: zero tolerance for al-Qaeda terrorism. Our troops are fighting to destroy the enemy, not to encourage it.
Look idiot. They're going to be killing someone. Themselves, or Americans/Europeans/Israelis.
It's not a matter of if they do it, it's who they are killing. I prefer them to destroy their own culture, not ours.
I have to keep reminding myself that this is Saturday night and lots of people are just getting in from drinking.
I suppose you'd prefer them bombing us here too? If they're going to bomb, and they will bomb, better over there than here.
People really shouldn't post after they've been out all night.
And you certainly don't help your case by calling respected Freepers "idiots."
If someone's going to accuse me of being an AQ supporter, they're lucky that's all I call them.
So what are you, a selective supporter?
That's why I mentioned Clinton. If they're against Clinton or liberal x, and I am too, does that make me an AQ supporter?
What kind of logic is that?
But that's not what you implied; you implied as long as they didn't bomb over here, that's fine with you.
trop targets don't bother me. If they wanna bomb them, fine. I wanna bomb them too, so they are helping us in that cause.
They're all my enemy. If a KBG guy during the cold war got pissed and blew up a USSR Submarine, I would have supported it. Would that make me pro-KBG?
You guys need to think some before hurling insults.
Ah, you're the one all over the forum calling people idiots.
And I certainly didn't HURL anything at you.
Maybe you should go on to bed.
Well, it's a sad day when al-Qaeda supporters are allowed to post on this forum. They want to sabotage and undermine our military strategy.
Learn 2 read. He insulted me, out of the blue, over an old topic (against FR rules btw).
I dare you to call me an AQ supporter to my face.
Learn not to lecture me.
And let's all pretend HAL is the only person on the forum you're insulting this time of night.
We can ALL see ALL your posts.
You're being too cute by half in starting your fights.

Rape case verdict
Monday, 20 February 2006
The victim of a gang rape stormed out of a Dubai courtroom yesterday after hearing that two of the six defendants on trial for the assault were found not guilty because of insufficient evidence.
Four others, aged between 19 and 21, including two brothers, were sentenced to two years in prison each by the Dubai court of first instance for the attack, last September, on a 23-year-old British woman.
The court also awarded the victim temporary damages of dhs10,000 plus legal costs. The public prosecutor will appeal the judgement, looking for a tougher sentence.
The victim's lawyer, Hamdan Al Harmi, yesterday expressed his client's anger over the acquittal of the two defendants but said they will now file a civil action for further damages.
Medical evidence during the trial showed that the victim had sustained undisclosed injuries resulting from the rape which took place in a remote part of the desert, near the Ras Al Khaimah road.
The victim had accepted the offer of a lift home from the group of young men in Jumeirah after being intimidated by another group of youths. However, the two gangs were working together and instead the woman was driven to the desert where the men took turns in raping her in the car.
The gang later drove her back and dropped her off at Al Mullah Plaza and the victim alerted the police.
A taxi driver was able to provide police with a description the suspects' vehicle descriptions, leading to the gang's arrest within the same day. Four were held without bail in the lead up to the trial.
I read the letters to the editor at the source. It's enough to make me want to take a long hot shower with a steel wool pad for a washrag.
They just about came out and said these women deserved it.
There's a lesson in here folks. Don't go to Arab countries. They don't like us. In fact, they pretty much hate us unless we're stomping the crap out of whatever tinpot thug shot his way into power in their country.
After we stomp the crap out of the aforemention thug we have about a 6 month window while they cheer us as liberators, kiss our soldiers, and tell us how much they love the USA. Then they're back to hating us as infidels.
It happens every single time.
So, let's just confine ourselves to stomping the crap out of tinpot dictators who actually pose a threat to American interests every few years and getting the hell out. Let them hire Filipinos and Indians to run their countries.
Where ever your from trust me you don't want to vacation, live, or work in the Arab world.
L
Knock it off.
That sounds like whiskey talking.
As I advised you up the thread, best go to bed.
LOL.. If only I had some booze. Sorry, don't drink though. Been busy all night, and noticed all this nonsense going on.
And again, I'd love to see him come over to Dallas and tell me I'm an AQ supporter.
You-Hoo, this thread is not about you.
Again, knock it off.
Quit trying to pick fights.
If you don't object to ALL their killings, I'd consider that situational ethics on your part.
Killing is killing, no matter who it is.
"Killing is killing, no matter who it is."
So you're against killing terrorists too? Better get all our guys out of Iraq quick right? The war was a mistake then?
No, I'm not against killing people who've attacked us.
But you're insinuating that everybody they kill deserves to be killed.
Probably because they're Arab.
Not Arab. trop members, yes. I'm hardly the only one that considers that a 'kill or be killed' situation though.
I didn't insult you, I just stated the facts. You openly applaud al-Qaeda's act of terrorism earlier this week and call for more.
If you believe the rules are being violated, click the Report Abuse link. You might also want to have them look at message at #4 above, where you call someone a "trop shill".
I think we have a good understanding of your position now. To be clear on the U.S. policy about the event, here is the White House Press Release.
Go to the front of the room and write 100 times: They are MUSLIMS. They are MUSLIMS. They are MUSLIMS....
No doubt due to the multicultural influence. One must, as they say, celebrate diversity.
