Police sergeant arrested by FBI in sex predator sting
The Boston Glob ^ | 2/26/06 | Michael Levenson, Globe Correspondent

Posted on 02/26/2006 6:56:28 AM PST by misterrob

When he pulled into the parking lot of the Meadow Glen Mall in Medford, State Police Sergeant Brian O'Hare believed he was about to meet the 14-year-old boy he had been courting for months on the Internet, and the two would have sex, authorities said yesterday.

But there was no boy, just FBI agents waiting to arrest O'Hare at the end of a six-month undercover sting in which agents posed as flirty teenagers on an AOL chat room dubbed BoysShowerM4, said FBI spokeswoman Gail A. Marcinkiewicz.

Well known among his 2,300 peers in the State Police, O'Hare is a 19-year veteran of one of the state's most respected law enforcement agencies. After his arrest Friday, he was charged in federal district court in Boston with coercion and enticement of a minor under 18 to engage in prostitution or sexual activity.

If convicted, O'Hare could face five years in prison.

Only 5 years for trolling for boys?

Also, what sort of a moron in law enforcement does this? Guess the need to be a pervert outshone any thought that this could have been a set up.

I know it's not possible, but I wish it weren't publicized how they're catching these people. I don't want them figuring out ways to avoid it.

Given that in that part of the country you only get 60 DAYS for raping young girls repeatedly over a 7 year period, 5 years will be argued as being unduly harsh and cruel.

It will be hard to defend against that charge.

It doesn't sound like much, but think about it...an ex-cop and a pedophile? Bubba and Leroy are gonna make sure it's a long five years!

If someone in law enforcement is convicted of this sort of thing, the prison term should be higher.

One would think that AOL would post some kind of WARNING! sign on their pervert sites.

State Police Sergeant Brian O'Hare (state poilce?) may be unable to renew his AOL membership, (unless MA prisons have computers for inmates) thereby causing AOL to lose money.

If this keeps up they may well have to charge more.

Also to consider that 14 year old boys are out there on the web hustling up sex as not everyone one of these interactions has police involved. If fathers did their jobs maybe there wouldn't be as much of this going on either.

Looks like the Left's perfect law enforcement officer to me- why he should be a boy scout leader and what a great military man he would be the Picture boy for our feminized military. He and many more like him are a direct result of our sick political and moral society.
PC/Diversity vs homophobia..and we get the ruin of the Catholic church, and homosexual child molesters in positions of authority everywhere.

This is a type of behaviour commonly practiced by men in Muslim countries and in the ancient world. It won't be long until liberalism promotes this as normal, also, out of "tolerance". /sarc

The way I read it is if the sexual predator doesn't send picture of someone, supposedly himself, dressed only in underwear nor shows up in person to meet the "boy" he will be fine.

That is the kind of message I WANT sexual predators to get. Don't send dirty pictures and don't try to physically meet, then the police won't arrest you.

That would be fair. In most states there are increased penalties for crimes against police officers.

Yeah, everyone knows they can get it for free from their teacher!

The divergence in their values is laughable. Porking young boys is tolerable, but if a young girl is involved she will be murdered because she dishonored the family.

Isn't this how Scott Ritter got busted? I realize he was on the prowl for young girls but I believe he got a defferred sentence or something like that. How would this be different than what he did?

Something like that happened a couple years ago to a downriver Detroit area police chief. Met a teenage boy for a whatever-for-money in a school parking lot, then the boy and accomplice tried to rob him at gunpoint, and the cop killed the boy and had to resign in disgrace.

While I think pedophiles are pernicious and despicable, I worry when the law entices the crime; the protections of the amendments are steadily being eroded and rights replaced by privileges.

Prosecuting virtual crime could end up using resources better deployed locally.

Still, I guess we can get used to paranoia over time.

I didn't answer your question. By my experience the ratio of homo to straight seems to be around the same as the regular population - 2 or 3 percent or less. I imagine it's the same ratio for pedos - maybe a small fraction of one percent. In 20 years I've only known one officer who I later learned was later investigated for doing underage girls (around 16 yoa). Never found out if he got convicted or pled or whatever.

You'd think these scumbags would learn by now. That 13 y/o boy or girl you're chatting with is likely someone in law enforcement. People are just stupid and deserve to be busted and sent to prison.

So Ritter didn't do any time and is free to move about the country bashing W. Maybe this cop should start bashing W and walk away free also. These are the same crimes. Why would there be different punishments? They both knew what they were doing was wrong.

I think that poisoning the well will make it more difficult for pedophiles to ply their trade. The fact that the online companies allow these chat rooms to exist is equally bad as they are providing a forum for this stuff to occur.

Free speech? Sorry, but you won't make that sell here. If pedophilia is a crime then I see no reason why police cannot operate under cover much like they do in other criminal situations.

I don't consider adults engaging in sexual conversations with minors an issue of free speech. Furthermore, soliciting of sex online or making plans to meet and have sex are not issue of free speech either. What someone is doing in that instance is conspiring to commit a crime.
