Dubai Ports World uses [Israeli Shipping Co.] Zim connection in US deal
Globes [online] ^ | 26 Feb 06 | Ran Dagoni

Posted on 02/26/2006 7:12:18 AM PST by LesbianThespianGymnasticMidget

“It's the largest shipping company in Israel. And the president of Zim is very close to our company and supports us”

Dubai Ports World, the combined United Emirates (UAE) port management company for the Gulf, has stepped up its challenge to win the operating rights of six major ports in the US, by claiming it has strong business ties with Israeli shipping company Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd..

Dubai Ports World has acquired the veteran British company Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation (P&O), which owned the operating rights to six US ports in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Miami and New Orleans. The projected transfer of ownership to the Gulf port operator met with strong opposition from legislators in both parties and both houses of Congress on Capitol Hill. However, US President George W. Bush said he would veto any bill that aimed to block the transfer of the management of the ports to the Arab company.

Dubai Ports World has launched an intensive lobbying campaign to soften opposition on Capitol Hill, recruiting top-flight American lobbyists and politicians, including former Senator and Republican presidential candidate Robert Dole. The company also dispatched deputy CEO Ted Bilkey, an American citizen, who gave interviews in the media and met with legislators in an attempt to push the deal through.

Asked in an interview last week with “CNN” reporter Wolf Blitzer whether Dubai Ports World was doing business with Israel while the UAE refused to recognize Israel, Bilkey replied, “One of our very sound customers is Zim line. It's the largest shipping company. And the president of that company is very close to our company and supports us, because we have good relations with all of our clients.

” We handle their operations in a number of ports throughout the world because it's good commercial business for us. They wouldn't come to us unless we did a good job,” added Bilkey.

Blitzer: “Does the emir know this?”

Bilkey: “Absolutely.”

Israel has been caught spying on the US and attacked a US ship at sea.

Would the Dems squeal if an Israeli company was handed the port deal?

Not sure - their policies towards Israel were worse than Bush's (not that his is perrect.

What is sure is that dems aren't the only ones "squealing" about this deal,

and

that PALEOS certainly would (all while using Israeli designed software and medical technology....)

WHAT'S YOUR POINT?

Dubai Ports World will manage 21 ports from Portland, Maine to Corpus Christi, Texas, not just 6 ports.

Why don't we just give them the whole port, the land it sits on and the city that surround that? Why should we pay taxes to build infrastruture that profits a foreign company and a foreign nation. We might even want to just do a package deal and let them have the original 13 so long as they agree to take DC off our hands.

i have reservations about this deal but my question is, arab vessels do not call @ israeli ports(nscsa & usac), israeli carrier zim does not call @ mideast ports, does anybody know how this will affect the operations if the deal goes through...

my concerns on the 23rd were the israeli manifests & bills of lading of freight in the hands of the u.a.e., doesn't seem to be a worry now, does it...

A couple days ago I was ridiculed on another thread for pointing out the difference between one nation not formally recognizing another and wanting to wipe it off the map. Some "Freepers" just couldn't grasp the distinction.

We might even want to just do a package deal and let them have the original 13 so long as they agree to take DC off our hands.

The real issue here is not who gets the port operation business.

The winning issue is why there are no American companies in this business!!

And what can we do to resurrect the American port industry.

Sometimes this kind of gut reaction is what can take the issue to the next level.

You didn't really ask that question did you?

I mean is your vision so restricted that it can't see that world trade involves foreign companies?

Get a grip.

The money you personally save at Walmart will more than offset the very minor portion of your taxes used. Don't forget that user fees are collected to supplement your meager offering.

I still do not like this deal, and I will tell you why.

1) This transaction is not between two private companies. The UAE company is owned by the government of UAE. Therefore, we have a private company from the UK that is selling to a country (not a private company as some want us to believe).

2) UAE still has it out for Israel (BIG RED FLAG). They take the same position as Hamas. Basically they want to finish off Hitler's job.

3) Iran is a problem. Do I really need to explain? UAE has been going out of its way to keep help Iran with normal trade status

4) Jimmy Carter likes this deal (another flag)

If UAE is threatening our friendship over this deal, then they were never really our friends from the get go.

Welcoming Terror to US Ports

On July 27, 2005, the Palestinian Information Center carried a public HAMAS statement thanking the UAE for it’s “unstinting support.” The statement said: “We highly appreciate his highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan (UAE president) in particular and the UAE people and government in general for their limitless support…that contributed more to consolidating our people's resoluteness in the face of the Israeli occupation".

The HAMAS statement continued: "the sisterly UAE had… never hesitated in providing aid for our Mujahid people pertaining to rebuilding their houses demolished by the IOF… The UAE also spared no effort to offer financial and material aids to the Palestinian charitable societies." Indeed, as documented by the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center at the Center for Special Studies (C.S.S), HAMAS charitable societies,” are known as integral parts of the HAMAS infrastructure, and are outlawed by Israel and the U.S.

Therefore, we have a private company from the UK that is selling to a country (not a private company as some want us to believe).

The other company (PSA) that was bidding for P&O was also government-owned (though more sneakily).

How about those Red Chinese companies which manage terminals on our West Coast? it shouldn't be too difficult to find they're ultimately under the thumb of the Red Chinese government.

I don't think the UAE has done any threatening. As far as I can tell, all the threats have come from unthinking reactionaries here is the USA. And let me clue you in on something else as well. When a "friend" makes constant demands from YOU and never considers what you might need or what might benefit you, it's not a friendship. You might have a me, me, me, it's all about me type of relationship with your friends but most of us wouldn't tolerate that type of bullsh*t.

You do not think the UAE has done anything threatening? Have you ever heard the old cliche, "if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck"?

So I guess you do not believe their positions on Iran or Israel is a threat to our National Security? What demands has the USA made on UAE? Please enlighten me?

I cannot believe you view our country as "me me me". We are by the far the most generous country in the world. Just tell me this.... Any time there is a problem in the world who is always coming to the rescue? I just where you get this, "me me me" crap.

Let me clue you in on something Pal. Right now we are fighting a global war on radical Islam. To be a little concerned in post September 11th world about who is running your ports is not being "Me Me Me". It's called Security.

I guess you would find it perfectly ok if an Arab company owned by a State wanted to be in charge of White House security. Yeah nothing would happen..... LMAO!
