Few Mexicans abroad are voting Study finds confusion, apathy over process

To say Mexico's first-ever attempt at allowing absentee ballots from its citizens living abroad has had very little success might be an understatement. More than half of Mexican nationals surveyed recently by the Pew Hispanic Center weren't even aware that a presidential election is taking place this year, and only one in 10 could correctly answer a series of questions about how to get a ballot. The survey looked at why fewer than one-half of 1 percent of some 10 million Mexicans living in the United States registered for absentee ballots by the Jan. 15 deadline. Roberto Suro, director of the Pew Hispanic Center, said, "It's easy to quantify and explain why many people did not participate" when considering the strict requirements for absentee voting, a lack of information about registration procedures and a lack of public interest.

Why should they vote in Mexico when they can easily vote in US elections?

Maybe they don't care much for Mexico as much as Mexico believes they do. They just wanted out. Why vote? Why should they? Mexico has many problems that continue to exist.
