In whose warped world is it wrong to honor a war hero?
Everett Herald ^ | 2-27-2006 | Larry Simoneaux

I come late to this one, but I thought I'd add my two cents. There's been a bit of a dust up going on at the University of Washington. It's over a recent proposal to erect a monument there to honor Col. Greg "Pappy" Boyington. Col. Boyington was a Marine Corps pilot who commanded the "Black Sheep" squadron during some of the toughest fighting of World War II. He was credited with shooting down more than 20 Japanese aircraft before he, himself, was shot down and then spent almost two years as a prisoner of war. For his leadership, bravery and accomplishments in the war, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. The uproar over the proposed monument came when the minutes of the Student Senate meeting were published and several statements made therein came to light. I'll not name the student senators making the following statements as, in the past week or so, they've already had their nonsense more than amply pointed out. I quote now from the minutes of the meeting: "XXXX questioned whether it was appropriate to honor a person who killed other people. She said she didn't believe a member of the Marine Corps was an example of the sort of person UW wanted to produce." "YYYY commented that many monuments at UW already commemorate rich white men."

"All I can say is that I'm sorry for your bad experience. I would've thought better of him."

You know at the time I was taken aback but I thought about it later its not a big deal. It was just one of those moments in your life that remains crystal clear. He is still a Hero. Its just the whole dynamic of putting someone up on a pedestal and then being dissapointed when they fall. I am sure it happens a lot.

Pappy is famous for saying: "Just name a hero and I'll prove he's a bum." Its on the back of his book.

Besides He is still a personal hero :)

Perhaps that is what he thought of himself. And, if so, how sad that he thought this. It is unimaginable to me that a man of such accomplishments had such a low opinion of himself.

Not so. I have a friend who works for NOAA who got his BS and MS from Udub. He's a very smart guy.

Unfortunately, he's also a liberal. But he is no airhead.

Were I in a position as a personell director for a large corporation, I think I would just exclude any applicants who had graduated from this particular istitution of lower learning.

What I am saying is that the fact that some at UW don't want it is irrelevant when the overriding fact is that they don't deserve it. It doesn't matter a rat's butt about what they want when they don't deserve.

On the upside I managed to get the ENTIRE crew of B-17 Enola Gay to sign my B17 poster. Including the pilot Paul Tibbets. So I didn't go away empty handed.

That would be a B-29
