BAGHDAD (Army News Service, Feb. 27, 2006) – Acting on a tip from an Iraqi citizen, a team from Multi-National Division – Baghdad’s 53rd Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company stopped a potential threat Friday by finding and disposing of an MK-84 bomb near a mosque south of Al Hillah.
Due to the bomb’s location near the religious shrine, the team had no other choice than to burn the bomb in place as a last resort, officials said. They said the team was able to do this without any damage to the mosque, Iraqi citizens or MND – B Soldiers.
Elsewhere, Soldiers from the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division’s Special Police Transition Team, found a body and a weapons cache Friday while on patrol in southern Baghdad.
The murder victim had been shot in the chest.
The cache consisted of two 60mm mortar tubes, 11 60mm rounds, two rocket-propelled grenades with two rockets, 60 7.62mm rounds, five roadside bombs primed with washing machine timers, two cordless phones, five additional washing machine timers and one anti-tank hand grenade.
One of the mortar-firing devices was mounted to the back of a tractor.
An MND-B Explosive Ordnance Disposal team secured the cache to ensure that it would not be used against Coalition Forces.
In another incident, an Iraqi woman and child were wounded Friday when a terrorist’s mortar round impacted on a house in the Al Kadhmiyah area of northern Baghdad.
Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 6th Iraqi Army Division, transported the wounded to a local hospital for treatment.

The soldiers should have pretended that there was nothing they could do with the bomb and moved to a safe place and let the bomb blow up.

IED's are simply non-exploded bombs that the terrorists are using. The majority of our casualties actually come cahces that we left there last time. Duds AND cached weapons are used. Sometyimes they work, sometimes they dont. It's equally likely that it could have been a few rpg rounds from a russian launcher strapped together.
In other words "They FOUND it"

I think this basic fact is a big part of why the Gambino/Gotti crime family has gotten their union longshoremen to put the arm on their bought and paid for pols over the ports deal. They don't want to let another family that knows how to play the game the same way they do to have a foot in the door on their turf.
