Seized seeds could have produced 42 million joints: RCMP

RCMP officers in Montreal have dismantled an international operation that they allege was selling marijuana seeds over the internet.
INDEPTH: Marijuana
Investigators claim they seized 200,000 seeds, enough to run 500 grow operations if planted and nurtured correctly.
That many plants would have the potential to generate about 42 million joints, reporters were told as police displayed the seized material Tuesday.
See-through envelopes each held half a dozen tiny khaki seeds, and carried labels displaying names such as Thai Tingler. Police also showed stacks of high-denomination bills, some bars of gold, several computers and a black T-shirt printed with the URL cannabisworld.com.
Sgt.-Maj. André Potvin said the bust will have an impact around the world because the group allegedly operated throughout North America, the United Kingdom and other regions.
Police say buyers ordered seeds through six separate websites, and the company allegedly sent them out by mail.
Seven people face a total of 49 charges as a result of the investigation, which began in November 2004.
Marijuana activists like Marc-Boris Saint-Maurice, founder of the Marijuana Party, said they'll be watching the court case carefully.
"There is the impression that seeds are legal in Canada," he said. "This case is unprecedented, so I guess that the upcoming court case is going to be important to try and figure out the actual legal status of seeds."
The RCMP say there's nothing to figure out. Selling cannabis seeds is illegal in Canada, and anyone caught doing it will be arrested.

These are the same folks who leave big clumps of dirt on the roots when they weight plants.

Doesn't matter. Two seeds could produce the same results over time, provided one of the plants turns out to be male and the other female.
Kind of a silly estimate when talking about living things that reproduce.

200,000 seeds, enough to run 500 grow operations if planted and nurtured correctly ... That many plants would have the potential to generate about 42 million joints Or, they could have been used to produce another 10,000,000 seeds which, in turn, could produce 2 billion joints ...
200,000 seeds is what, about one 14x14x20 box full .. not exactly the bust of the century.

It used to be that LEOs would give street value by the joint for small pot busts it would make it look bigger than it really was. Now theyre doing it for
seeds?

Through a simple cloning process a single female plant could produce a practically infinite number of new plants without ever bearing a single seed. Just clip off a small branch and force it to grow roots of its own. Bingo new plant. Can be done over and over for years on end. Sounds like someone needs to take horiculture 101.

Can't be right. They aren't accounting for the 'spilling of the rolling tray'.
Maybe 29.5 million joints.

Knew someone who had over 500lbs.when he got busted. After a few months,he grew tired of waiting for his punishment, and pressured his lawyer to just get on with it so he could put it behind him.The amount meant a lot as far as punishment went. His lawyer scolded him and told him to be patient.Sure enough, when they finally went to court.his lawyer wanted all the trash taken out[seeds, stems],but the kicker was,it sat in the evidence room long enough to finish drying out so when he went to trial,it only weighed 320lbs.which was enough to get him 4 years instead of 20!

Seized seeds could have produced 42 million joints: RCMP
Why are these police officers obsessively counting Mary Jane seeds? Why not just weigh them. Are they too usersof what is now a drug whose use ( but not production) is now legal in Bananada?
Mr. Harper and his conswervatives have years of hard work ahead of them. Tell the red coats just to weigh the seeds next time instead of counting all of them.
I mean don't we already have enough bean counters in Canada without converting the RCMP into the same mandarin socialist bureaucrats ?
