On the way to India for his first visit there (which will include talks on a landmark deal on civilian nuclear trade), President Bush made his second surprise visit to US troops overseas, this time in Afghanistan, visiting with some of the approximately 19,000 US troops there, as well as President Hamid Karzai. Then it was on to India.

QUOTE: "It's in our nation's interest that Afghanistan develop into a democracy. It's in the interests of the United States of America for there to be examples around the world of what is possible, that it's possible to replace tyrants with a free society in which men and women are respected, which young girls can go to school to realize their full potential, in which people are able to realize their dreams."

I am glad you included MRS. Bush in the title...
and I am glad I didn't know about the Afghanistan stopover until AFTER he left...
Although, I do believe that someone who does this thread predicted this would happen...
I just can't remember which of you wonderful people did.

Pumping iron, with Condoleezza Rice Feb 28
Link to video US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will flex more than her diplomatic muscles when she demonstrates her personal workout regime on network television this week.
In an unusual departure for such a high-profile official, Rice not only pumps some iron, but also discusses how she manages to stay fit during her continual globetrotting and reveals strategies for coping with high-calorie banquets.
She is tough, I have to tell you," said Barbara Harrison, a news co-anchor with the NBC4 channel in Washington who persuaded Rice, 51, to put on her gym sweats and participate in a regular segment on health and fitness.
"She is amazing. The amount of weights she handles and the endurance she has ... As a person who has exercised all my life, I was very impressed," said Harrison, who joined in the workout at the State Department gym with Rice and her personal trainer. "She looks good throughout the whole workout," Harrison added.
... The relevant news segments -- each lasting a few minutes -- will be broadcast over three days, with each one starting at 5:45 am (1045 GMT). According to Harrison, Rice talks about managing her fitness regime when travelling and how, during official banquets, she manages to stay within her calorie range "and not insult anybody by not eating something that they've gone to great lengths to prepare." Harrison said she hoped the segments would inspire others with hectic work lives to keep in shape. "We see her as one of the busiest people in the world," she said. "The fact that she can squeeze in a workout in the middle of her incredible schedule, suggests the rest of us should be able to do the same thing." # # #

They really do. Too bad, TOO BAD for them and for us, and for people in other nations who watch American news, that the crusty, liberal media hardly EVER show photos like we find on the Dose.

It is good to call these things back to mind, often.
God only knows how many Afghanis are alive today because we took out the Taliban -- and how much trouble we have saved ourselves.

GWB needs a snazzy hat like Hamid Karzai. He should have worn a fancy Stetson.

I am so proud of this first family because of the way they love our troops. That was probably a dangerous detour to make and yet they thought enough of our soldiers to risk it for them. It brings tears to think of that kind of love.

Amen! I was thinking what a handsome and beautiful line up of troops the US of A has.
Loved the pic of Rummy and his lovely bride.
Our President and First Lady always graceful and represent our country well.
Did you see "He's with me" SS guy? Guess I will never forget that little mix up between President Bush and the Chilean police. (
It was in Chili wasn't it?
I believe Laura, Mrs Rumsfeld, Karen Hughes and maybe Lynn Cheney made a trip to Afghanastan a couple of years ago.
