UCI Psychiatrist Bilked by Nigerian E-Mails (had claimed Reagan had diminished mental ability)
Los Angeles Times ^ | March 2, 2006 | William Lobdell,

Posted on 03/02/2006 4:01:17 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

A renowned psychiatrist from UC Irvine was duped into squandering at least $1.3 million of his family's fortune on a Nigeria Internet scam, according to a lawsuit recently filed by his son.

...Louis Gottschalk, a neuroscientist, is the founding chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at UCI College of Medicine. He gained national prominence by announcing in 1987 that President Reagan had been suffering from diminished mental ability as early as 1980.

He came to this conclusion by using the Gottschalk-Gleser scales, an internationally used diagnostic tool he helped develop for charting impairments in brain function, to measure speech patterns in Reagan's 1980 and 1984 presidential debates.

In 1997, Gottschalk gave $1.5 million to the UCI College of Medicine. In exchange, school officials named the medical plaza after him and his late wife.

More recently, Gottschalk coinvented software that uncovered a link between childhood attention-deficit disorder and adult addiction to alcohol and drugs. And in 2004, at age 87, he published his latest book, "World War II: Neuropsychiatric Casualties, Out of Sight, Out of Mind."

Dear Dr. Gottschalk,
I am writing you to ask a favor that will help me and prove profitable to you. I have a huge pile of money in a Swiss bank account and I need to launder it so that it looks legit to the local bankers and authorities in my hometown. Please give me access to all your financial information, you life insurance policy, your mother's maiden name, the name of your pet, where you went on your honeymoon, and stuff like that so that I can get my money out of the Swiss bank account and into my sweaty palms so I can begin to spend it. You can trust me because I am on the Internet and scam artist don't know how to use the internet. Let me know as soon as you can. Thank You. Your totally legit net surfer pal.

A liberal idiot who pronounced Reagan an idiot turns out to be have been taken in by Nigerian e-mail scammers? Wow, I find it hard to believe he could be that stupid. Apparently as his son discovered, yep he dealt with Dr. Mobekuwuku or whoever in Lagos and lost $1.3 million. I have yet to hear of President Reagan having lost his shirt in that scam.

One must question how smart this guy ever was.

But that would hardly matter to LIBERALS out to slam President Reagan.

Remember what an idiot Reagan was supposed to be, then all his writings became available and the world could see what a bright bulb he was.

The sliming left must have loved and adored this stupid doctor and his quirky medicine. I wonder how many people used his Gottschalk-Gleser scales.

Gee, think about how well he could have done without "half his brain tied behind his back"!

I'm only in my forties, and I'm already suffering from "diminished mental ability". (Now WHERE are those car keys?!)

Schadenfreude. I don't wish any one misfortune in their lives but some people just don't stop to think about the old adage, "if it sounds too good to be true...," it would save them a lot of grief. And there's the other saying that comes to mind in this tale. "A fool and his money are soonest parted."

A violation of medical ethics. A doctor is not to diagnose patients he has not examined. The press never lets ethics stand in the way of a good hatchet job, so they played it up.

In the 1964 campaign, as I recall, a group of psychiatrists took out a newspaper ad to say that Barry Goldwater was psycho. I think they concluded, thoughtfully, that Goldwater would blow up the world. Psychiatrists hear voices under their tinfoil hats.

So, let me see if I have this right. The idiot who had the audacity to declare in 1987 that Ronald Wilson Reagen was sliding into dementia, has only proven that Ronnie on his worst day, was certainly a whole lot smarter than the declaree. With that in mind, maybe it is understandable why the son of the declaree is working on the court case, or did I miss the demise of the declaree, or is this just more evidence of the state of mind of said declaree who on his best day couldn't handle a simple email from Nigeria, while RWR was winning the cold war, running the country, and generally making fools of those who thought he was the idiot.

Reagan won the debates. If he was mentally impaired, what does that make Jimmy Carter and Fritz Mondale?

Incidentally, four years into his mental impairment, Reagan carried 49 states and defeated Mondale 525 to 13 in the electoral college.

"Another senile victim gets scammed"

I am becoming senile, but I am not yet stupid :)

For some reason, I have turned up on the Nigerian scam list
via my Yahoo Email. I get about one every day, but is the
about the only spam that I get on Yahoo.

On Hotmail, I have no Nigerian scams but I get 15 to 30 spams every day, and thats with my having used all the spam options that hotmail offers....Hotmail sucks.

Today, I am presenting to the world my new study: Sensei-Ern scales.

It has one question and it is to determine your gullibility:
1. Have you ever given money to a Nigerian Internet Scam?
(0 points for: NO) (1 point for: YES, continue to accumulate for multiple YES responses)

0 - You are not that gullible
1 - Oh man, that hurts
2 - I have some NOLA property you might be interested in
3 or more - Hi Doc! Isn't it sad when you maliciously attack the greatest modern president and it comes back to bite you in the behind?

Please feel free to take the test. There is a nominal fee to get the results: Multiply your score by $100...ie: Doc, just hand over the trust fund.
