Family group notes that best picture nominee has 182 expletives
abc13.com ^

Posted on 03/02/2006 5:12:19 AM PST by AmericanMade1776

FamilyMediaGuide.com, which tracks incidents of profanity, sex, violence and tobacco use in films, reported Tuesday that "Crash" had 182 expletives, including 99 utterances of the F-word.

The movie, about racial tensions in Los Angeles, is nominated for six Oscars, including best picture, best director, best screenplay and best supporting actor.

"Brokeback Mountain" ranked second among best picture nominees with 92 curse words, followed by "Munich" with 22, according to FamilyMediaGuide.com.

The record for most profanities in a film to win the best picture Oscar is held by the Vietnam War drama "Platoon," with 329. The Vietnam War drama "The Deer Hunter" is second with 208.

FamilyMediaGuide says it makes no judgment on a movie's value, but simply tracks instances of profanity, sex, violence and tobacco use as a guide to parents.

I wouldn't say that. It's entirely possible the writers have fine minds, but have constructed a number of feeble-minded characters. Don't know, haven't seen the film.

Yeah, when I see a movie about the mob or urban life I expect to hear, "Gosh darnit! You guys better get your patooties out of my hood, yo!" because it seems so real, like I was actualy there.

Or better yet, a war movie where the grizzled old Sarge yells at the private, "You better get your head out of your young bottom, soldier! When you see the enemy, I expect to kill those bad, naughty people!"

Drips with realism.

Did it ever occur to you that maybe most people don't go to the movies to see stark, ugly, violent, foul-mouthed "realism"?

I dunno, I used to go to the show to see adventure, romance, comedy, drama, melodrama, westerns, etc. that were written and produced so that folks could ESCAPE the darker side of realism for a couple of entertaining hours.

Now, Hollywood and Broadway want to cram sick "realism" down our throats whether we want it or not.

I'm glad I grew up when most movies were movies and not the products of warped minds with agendas.

"Now, Hollywood and Broadway want to cram sick "realism" down our throats whether we want it or not."

Oddly enough, I find that I'm forced to pay money to enter theaters where movies are shown. What does that mean? It means that every movie I see is a choice I make. Sometimes, I choose to see a movie that involves characters who are not the nicest people on the planet. Sometimes, they curse. Other times, I choose movies which are about other sorts of people.

I don't, however, remember any time when I was forced to watch a movie, except perhaps those awful films in high school. No swearing in those, as I remember. "The leopard has spots to help camoflage it in its environment." That was pretty much the dialog, as I remember it.

Choose the movies you wish to see. Don't choose the ones you don't wish to see. I'll do the same, thanks.

AVOID R-RATED MOVIES, and you won't be subjected to the F word 98 times. If you have kids, be careful about some PG-13 movies. I covered up my 13 yr old niece's eyes during the sex scene in "Under the Tuscan Sun."

The people who have no problem with cursing as the major form of dialog in a movie probably don't have children. When you have children, they're usually not seeing R-rated movies in theaters. They usually end up seeing it on dvd when parents aren't around. Of course, there are probably some parents who don't care that their kids watch trash and repeat it.

Would it make more sense to have the gang-bangers running around saying 'golly gee'? It's called realism. If you don't like it, don't watch it.

But I do like that there is an organization like this for people to make informed decisions on whether to see it, or for parents making the decision for their children.

I'm sure some people don't. Nobody is making them go those things. That's why we have a ratings system.

They still make the kind of movies you refer to. It's not my fault Hollywood doesn't nominate those for Oscars or really promote them the way they should. "Second-Hand Lions" is one of my favorite movies and I never knew it existed until it came on HBO.

1) Hollywood *does* want to cram this down our throat. They are constantly attacking the FCC and the network censors trying to get more cursing, graphic sex and violence, and toilet humor on the air.

2) Cable TV is given to us as package deal. Don't like the filth on channel "A" - too bad. If you want C-span or the Disney channel, you get the trash.

3) Why doesn't this freedom of expression apply to antisemitic remarks or ethnic slurs? Funny how Hollywood doesn't reflect that side of life.

4) Hollywood censors itself. "Reflecting Reality" is just a bunch of crap. Movies/TV don't *reflect reality* If Hollywood was trying to "reflect reality", you'd see conservative shown in a good light, ethnic slurs, ugly people, Priests and Pastors shown as good people, large numbers of Black criminals, the occasional immigrant shown doing something bad, women making false rape charges, etc.

5) If you and your mother run around calling everybody four letter words, fine, just stay away from my kids.

"5) If you and your mother run around calling everybody four letter words, fine, just stay away from my kids."

Huh? My mother never uses four letter words, other than ones like "love" and "nice." She's 81 years old now, and still a wonderful woman and now great-grandmother.

As for myself, it is very rare that I utter any expletives. I believe I have said a curseword upon striking my thumb, instead of the nail, with a hammer. I find that my native language is quite expressive without them.

My point still stands. One needn't view any movie or television programming other than what one chooses to view. I have the complete line-up on my cable system, yet I rarely watch anything but a few channels on it. I carefully select what I view, and recommend that to everyone.

"182 expletives, including 99 utterances of the F-word"

So here you are, part of a nice "family group" and not only do they ask you to watch this movie but to sit and watch it several times so you can count the words.

So you first have to learn all the "bad" words then watch a movie with them.

Don't, sign me up for that job.

One other thing: If you really want to hear a lot of "bad" words, drop by the local middle school during recess or the lunch period. You'll hear enough to fill up dozens of movies.

People curse. It's not nice of them to do that, but they do it all the same. Movies are about people. If a movie is about a pastor, it probably won't contain a lot of cursing. If it's about a gangster, it will probably contain a good deal of cursing.

So, choose movies about pastors, not gangsters. That's my advice.

If I recall correctly the movie is suppoed to take place over several days. I can't imagine that most blue collar workers don't hear 182 expletives over that amount of time. I'm a college student and I would say I hear at least that many between Thursday and Saturday.

Why is a family group worried about cursing when it is clear that you must be an adult to go to a movie. If families go to these movies once the kids are in college then it is up to them to see the movie. I pray to God that this stupid family group does not receive any public funding. I don't want to pay a penny to any of them. They are going after something that does not exsist. Children are not allowed to be in R movies.

No offense. But..

1) I said "if"; given your support of profanity, it was a reasonable assumption that you use and value profanity in real life.

2) Yeah, someone with a gun doesn't force me to watch anything, so what? Everytime you critise Hollywood, someone pops up with "well, you can change the channel". Duh!

3) Hollywood's products influence society, especially kids.
Hollywood admits it. There are things not shown on screen or on the air. So the discussion is *NOT* to censor or not; its what are we going to censor, and who is going to censor. Ethnic Slurs, (especially anti-semitic remarks), portraying certain racial groups or countries in too bad a light, graphic depictions of killing animals; showing how to commit certain crimes, are all exlcuded from the screen.

1) I don't "support" profanity. I do recognize that it is used a great deal in certain groups, and is appropriate in fictionalized accounts of such groups. It would be difficult to make a realistic movie about soldiers or criminals and leave that out.

2) Someons who says "well, you can change the channel" is absolutely correct. You can, indeed, do that. In fact, I recommend it. What I do not recommend is that you make everyone's decisions for them. I definitely do not want that. I doubt very much that you and I would agree on which are the best and worst examples of Hollywood filmmaking. So, feel free to change the channel on your television set, or even to turn it off. However, if you wish to change the channel on MY television set, you'll find me standing there insisting that you not do that.

You seem to ignore the main point. Profanity offends people, just like ethnic slurs. When Hollywood includes language in their programs that offends, people have a right to complain, boycott, and influence public opinion to change it.

The inclusion of profanity in movies and television is a new phenomenon, and is all part on the assault of family values and religion by left-wing Hollywood. Its also why you have shots of people talking in toilets, people making anti-religious jokes and statements, Priests/Pastors shown as crooks/fools, etc.

Myself,(excluding my wife/kids) I don't care about profanity. I consider profanity in RL a bore, I've been around people who use profanity in the military, and its gets very tiresome.

However, I consider the use of profanity in films (except in war films) an insult to the audience. Basically, they are saying 'We're too lazy to fill up 2 hours with well-written dialog, so we'll just use 4-letter words". They also know 13 year old boys love to hear. "naughty" words.

Thanks for the well reasoned posts.
