Katrina: Over the Top or Under the Radar? - Thursday, March 02, 2006 @ 10:03:26 AM
We're hearing from some sources on Capitol Hill that the AP's big story this morning on President Bush's pre-Katrina briefing (with both a video of the conference call, as well as documents that were leaked to the AP), was pulled together and leaked by Democratic staff on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, which has been holding hearings on the matter.
In speaking with White House sources, they say the video of the conference call between the President (who was at his ranch in Texas) and FEMA and Homeland Security officials was made available to Government Accountability Office investigators for their report, which was made public earlier this year. The White House believes GAO officials shared the video with Democratic staff.
As seems to be an almost weekly occurrence, the fellows over at Powerline take apart the so-called "explosive" report about the videotape and the leaked materials. Basically, the AP reporters have taken apples and oranges and attempted to make lemonade.
That's what happens when reporters who know little about a subject beforehand, and have no real interest in getting down to the nitty gritty, sit down with sources with axes to grind, who spin them for all they're worth. The result? A highly inaccurate story. The only upside is that perhaps this takes the Dubai port story down a couple notches.

Democrats Piss Me Off!
once again I say
where is the story?
the MSM is worthless
Gee...they had a discussion speculating that Katrina could be very dangereous. (Duh). ...Much ado about nothing.
If it weren't so damn serious it would be comical.
EVERYBODY expressed concerns ovwer the levies in New Orleans before Katrina. This story has about as much credibility as the one that only GWB said Saddam had WMD's. The MSM has a penchant for trying to turn common knowledge into a scandal-they never give up.
Signed up today, and having a grand time on a lot of threads already, eh?
Rush's substitute just said on air that the tape was made available to NBC last year. NBC confirmed that they had the tape last year. AP lied again. They didn't have secret leaked tapes.
I get so tired of the "Bush was warned" mantra. With all the "Levees Might Break" headlines in the run up to Katrina, only those who were illiterate and/or blind and deaf were unaware of the risk. Like most of the country, response efforts on the federal, state and local levels were lulled into thinking the danger had passed once the hurrican blew itself out. Obviously, the response could have been better. Bush's only failure was trusting those he had appointed to do a good job. Brown has to take the rap for this one.
According to Roger Hedgecock (subbing for Rush), the video was provided to NBC and the presstitutes in August of 2005.
Either way, the presstitutes are lying, creepy, liars....
Fake polls released yesterday showing that people in NO blame the President and absolve Nagin and BlankO of any culpability.
The MSM must have polled the dead people still unidentified in the NO morgue.
This is a non story. The ENTIRE NATION saw this storm coming for an entire WEEK. How stupid does Nagin have to be? They are still stuck on stupid.
Let me remind you that the PERCEPTION on Election Day was that lurch was going to win. Almost ALL polls said so, and the exit polling data said so, but it was NOT so.
Perception is just that. It has no power other than to aid those that want to deceive themselves.
Truth will win out over this contrived crap also!
LLS
DPMO PING!!!!!
And when I see these leeches protested their loss of free hotel rooms after all these months...I get furious.
Can you say unemployment line? Why do we keep these people around?
I saw this latest hit piece on our local FOX News station and was disappointed. Watching my local FOX News station anymore is no different than watching the other alphabet channels - exact copies, even the gross errors and obvious biased reporting.
A guy I knew used to say "The one person you never lie to is yourself". (He was a Finance guy, a Controller, so his bosses grew thoughful whenever he'd say it!)
I was telling my wife that "before it landed I knew the levees might not hold - the paper says they are built for a Class 4 and you have a Class 5 coming in - doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out".
Mayfield would be on the news days before saying how they need to get out of New Orleans now! That this has the potential to be devasting.
I don't recall the exact quote, but I think that Bush's comment about "nobody thought the levees would break" might be technicaly true - they thought they would be overtopped.
More importantly I think the comment points out that "no one thought it could be this bad (bad stuff only happens in thrid world countries)". The media had headlines saying as much. Rock stars and politicians both would say things like "it looks like something you would see in Bangladesh - not the United States".
Leaked? These were released to the press by the White House last year, the day after the hurricane hit New Orleans.
So let me getthis tr8.
The President knew a hurricane was coming sometime during the entire hurricane season, AND DIDN`T STOP IT !?
Impeachable offense for sure.
Right. I think they mean the copy and paste version that we see on the news
I know what you mean....I can't stand to hear any more whining about it, which is every night on the news. After Andrew hit Florida back when, we kept hearing alot about that also but it was always positive...how people were cleaning up and rebuilding. But with Katrina, all you hear
is how somebody isn't getting what they want and everybody is just sitting around looking at their devastation. What do they want views to do exactly? ARGHHHH!
Republicans Piss me off. When something damaging to the democrats (memos from the judiciary comm.) are leaked, the Republicans go after the leaker and bury the leaked material. This one sided parade of leaked materials has to stop and stop NOW!!!
I highly recommend the Powerline demolition of the AP story. The "Bush Knew" meme is based on the briefing expert predicting that the levees might be "topped" or have some spillage; the possiblity that they would give way is not mentioned at all.
Hmmmm, maybe some republican staffer can leak the minutes of the meeting between the President and Blanco. You guys remember the one, where Blanco said she needed 24 hours to decide whether or not to allow the feds to step in.
Not only does this bit of videotape SHOW the President was entirely on the ball about sending a warning to Governor Blanco and Mayor Nagin (which they did not respond to in a timely fashion), but that the Dem'crats are once again complicit in arranging yet another rope-a-dope for themselves.
The accursed masochists set themselves up again. Sometimes, no matter how they temporize, Bush really does the right thing.
bump
What are you suggesting? Kill them?

"Rush's substitute just said on air that the tape was made available to NBC last year. NBC confirmed that they had the tape last year. AP lied again. They didn't have secret leaked tapes"
So the held on to this information and released it now for what purpose? The port issue on hold for 45 days, so they decided to move on?.
How about the fact that Bush lied to the American people when he said "Nobody expected the levees to fail"? Not only was it expected, but he was apparently warned specifically.
I have supported Bush through thick and thin, but he lied. Plain and simple.
I just returned from coffee with friends where this was discussed. My friends are left leaning Independants and she saw it as confirmation that it was Bush's fault and that Nagin was doing all he could. "Bush KNEW the levy's wouldn't hold.". I said that I too knew the levy's wouldn't hold and that a Cat 5 hurricane was bearing down on them! DUH! Heck, last time we were in NOLA together we joked it being under sea level and that 'one of these days....'.
They are also waiting for all the "lies told to the Senators" by Alito and Roberts to come out re: abortion...some case in one of the Dakotas I think. The MSM is accomplishing their goal, IMHO. I don't think they'll get the impeachment they are after tho, just tarnish the name. He'll be remembered like Nixon.
Thank you. We will keep you in our prayers as well.
Without further comment...
Your screen name suits you. The weatherman said some overtopping/flooding was possible, not that 80% fo the city would be underwater.
Be my guest carry water for the MSM and the left.
why hasn't the leaker been arrested? This is a national security issue.
So you believe that "topped" has the same meaning as "breached"? Please find a dictionary.
In other news, New Orleans Mayor Nagin just ordered the city's school busses to start evacuating the city.

Media continues to ignore Bush's clarification on levy breach comment (Whitehouse.gov Transcript) From September 12, 2005.
Q Did they misinform you when you said that no one anticipated the breach of the levees?
THE PRESIDENT: No, what I was referring to is this. When that storm came by, a lot of people said we dodged a bullet. When that storm came through at first, people said, whew. There was a sense of relaxation, and that's what I was referring to. And I, myself, thought we had dodged a bullet. You know why? Because I was listening to people, probably over the airways, say, the bullet has been dodged. And that was what I was referring to.
Of course, there were plans in case the levee had been breached. There was a sense of relaxation in the moment, a critical moment. And thank you for giving me a chance to clarify that.
