And Mr. Horowitz would be correct.
So much of discussions in life comes down to DEFINITIONS.
It is ludicrous for libertarians and conservatives to hear the tripe from liberals about the "chilling effect from the right wing" on academic freedom.
How do we question this?
Simply make the LEFT define terms. Start with academic freedom.
They could define this in their emotions and heart (as apart from a dictionary, logic or common vernacular) as being able to hold fast to nothing, and believe everything they want and feel...all the while prohibiting those with whom they disagree from having anything to say whatsoever.
Simply put, you will NEVER be able to have a conversation with a socialist liberal WITHOUT defining the words you are using.
Why am I not surprised that this article was written by an ex-prof who spent all of his life in academia, surrounded by fellow liberals. Just think, students (and NY taxpayers) were actually paying good money, to have this dipstick teach them.
There may be many different viewpoints, but the writer of the article only wishes to allow certain of them to express themselves, and this passes for open-mindedness on today's campuses....
I'm taking a graduate level college class right now. The atmosphere is subdued and outspoken views never occur. The professor reminds us each class that academia is a political environment. The professor is always rude to non-minority non-women in the class, always lauding others. She told us she loves the writing of bell hooks (check it out - a fabulously bigoted leftist). I stay quiet, hand in the work, and hope that her attitude doesn't leak over into the grade I receive.
Sounds like freedom in the university to me.
"The harassment of academics based on their political views has begun to exact a toll on campus life. Suspicion and distrust, always a part of campus culture, have been exacerbated."
Right you are professor! Let's get those micro-recorders rolling!
This wouldn't even be a big deal if extreme leftists didn't hold 90% of faculty positions at ALL universities in the USA.
And the other point that he doesn't mention is that the media attention would be zero if the faculty behavior was within normal bounds. It is only BECAUSE the professors and teachers are so outrageous.
It just worked in Colorado and it will work for you, too.
The author of the editorial is from Buffalo; I'm from Baltimore. Hold your spit until the next time you go through Buffalo :)
No offense taken and I stand corrected. Thuggery exist regardless of affiliation (although I've noticed that much more so on the lib side) but in these cases it could be vendetta for a bad grade.
Not if it hit him at 75mph in the face....
College students do not tend to be as leftists as they used to be. Professors on the other hand...
I'm always afraid of being "outed" as a conservative professor (one of probably 2 on my campus)
Well, you'll simply have to take one for the team. Sorry. :)
Here is a thought...
what is the profs definition of a hate crime?
Probably...if someone disagrees with him enough to report it to the college administration....HATE CRIME...Ayahhhhhh!
Make him put his definition of a hate crime down on paper!
Well, I WAS impressed by the fact that he went to bat for the freedom of speach for Lawrence Summers, the President of Harvard who was just booted for his statements questioning PC positions....Oh wait, excuse me a second-
What? He didn't defend Summers???? Only left wing examples?
Oh.... never mind. It's just the same old BS.
I got to write a paper about food trends in Africa for tomorrow. I'm going to write the most liberal, america hating piece of crap I can dream up, because if I write the truth, I have a good chance of being graded poorly.
Exactly.
