Madonna eyes Israel house to await Messiah

US pop diva Madonna wants to buy a house in the Israeli town of Rosh Pina, where the ancient Jewish Kabbalah tradition expects the Messiah to appear at the end of the world.

Yediot Aharonot said the owner of a 100-year-old, ramshackle five-bedroom villa overlooking the Sea of the Galilee had been recently contacted several times by representatives of the superstar with a view to selling his property.

According to the same source, Madonna wants to renovate the building into a centre of study of mystical Jewish texts pored over by Kabbalah followers.

The self-proclaimed Material Girl, a keen aficionado of the ancient Jewish mystical tradition, last visited Israel in September 2004.

She turned to Kabbalah in 1997 through the Los Angeles-based Kabbalah Centre which proclaims to offer a path to spiritual enlightenment through an eclectic mix of Orthodox Jewish tradition, visualisation and positive thinking.

Two years ago, she took the Hebrew name Esther and reportedly observes the Jewish sabbath, although she has not converted to Judaism.

One of her recent dance tracks is called "Isaac", the name of famous Kabbalah Rabbi Isaac Louria who lived and worked in the now northern Israeli town of Safed during the 16th century.

Rosh Pina was settled in 1882 by a group of pioneers from Romania, making it the first Jewish village in the Upper Galilee in modern times. Rosh Pina's lands were purchased in 1878 by Jews from Tzfat, who tried unsuccessfully to earn their livelihood as farmers.

Arabs from neighboring villages frequently attacked Jewish traffic near the town. In 1938, Betar youth member Shlomo Ben Yosef took part in a retaliatory attack. I'll agree that I've seen no evidence of change, however, It is not for us to Ignore or not to Ignore when it come to her relationship to God.

Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, the Chief Rabbi of the city that what was once the Kabbalah center of the world, Tzfat, says that Kabbalah studies for Gentiles is "positive," if done in the proper manner.

Speaking with Arutz-7 today, Rabbi Eliyahu said, "I believe that the study of the Zohar by Gentiles, as in the common phenomenon we see today with Gentile musicians and entertainers studying Kabbalah, is a positive phenomenon - as long as it is done in the right way." He explained that it should not just be a matter of curiosity, but of a genuine search for the "Torah of life."

Rabbi Eliyahu addressed the matter in light of the jump in sales of books of Kabbalah. The Manufacturers Association informed Arutz-7 that in light of the world-wide awakening to Kabbalah around the world, exports of such books have tripled of late. Thirty-five million dollars worth of Kabbalah texts were exported around the world from Israel in 2005, and professional printers are in short supply relative to the continuing demand for holy books from Israel.

"This is exactly what Elijah the Prophet told [1st-century C.E. Zohar author] Rabbe Shimon bar Yochai and his group when they began writing the Zohar," Rabbi Eliyahu said, "that in the course of time, people will begin making a living from this work. Of course, Elijah was referring to the fact that it would have a spiritual effect on those who study it, but it can be understood this way as well."

"It is told about King David," the rabbi said, "that when he wanted to bring people closer to an authentic Torah life, he would teach them the 'secrets of Torah.' In general, to see people searching for spirituality is a positive and important development."

Meir Bar-El, Deputy Director of the Manufacturers Association, said that total exports of Jewish holy books in 2005 grew by 119% over the year before, and totaled $92 million - 70% of all book exports from Israel. He said that Israel is lacking in training courses for professional printers.

I may be in the minority but I have seen her commitment to the Kaballah and to Judaism as a step (however mis-guided) in the right direction. If I were her and had to face the kind of vitriol spewed about her by many who call themselves Christians, I'd be reluctant to become a Christian myself.

The events you describe are the faults of the people that did nothing to advance themselves, not Gods. We are supposed to work things out ourselves, we should always advance in knowledge. Whoever said that God is coming, and we should just slack off is an idiot. The God I know, rewards effort, hates slackers, and does not reward "do nothings". The ancient nation Israel, is told that God is with them. He is their sword and shield, but they still field an army, and fight their own battles. He gives them victory through effort, not victory for staying home and praying for it to happen.
