n the aftermath of the public revelation of the presidential "teleconference" and mounting criticism of the performance of Michael Chertoff, Administration sources told HUMAN EVENTS today that the secretary of Homeland Security has "only a few days left" in the Bush Cabinet.
As one source acquainted with the former federal prosecutor and U.S. appellate judge said under promise of anonymity, "They will give [Chertoff] a little time so it won't hurt his reputation too much, but he's probably got only a few days left."
For weeks, Chertoff has been under fire from Capitol Hill and the media for his performance during the disaster last year. In addition, more criticism has been fueled by his clash with former FEMA Director Michael Brown in the so-called post-Katrina "blame game." (See HUMAN EVENTS' exclusive report, "Brown: White House Made Me Scapegoat," in which he says, "Theyve got to keep me out there as a scapegoat. If they get rid of Chertoff, they have no new scapegoat. Then it goes to the White House.")

Put Gen Honore in
Why anyone would want that job is beyond me.
I like that idea!!
AGREED!ITS AN IMPOSSIBLE JOB.
I'm getting a little tired of this source said and anonymous source said. If you can't report, then don't. And it is that easy.
I was listening to Hugh Hewitt tonight...he had Mort Kondrake and Bill Sammons as guests...and he asked both if they had heard the rumor about Chertoff leaving...and they both said yes...but no confirmation..
That was before this thread came out...
PING
It would be great for maybe two years. then you do the consulting gigs. Brown said he got a pay increase in this deal. Looks like chirpoff threw brown under the bus and now HE is being thrown under the bus.
What's he dying of? Unsightly stubble?
"Put Gen Honore in "
I'll second that.
Its overwhelming alright. I guess that's why Tom Ridge left.
Rudy, Rudy, Rudy.
What is "homeland security" if not a military/inel/logistics operation? Yet we have since staffed the department with a lawyer and a horse show manager. Talk about being "stuck on stupid".
anonymous sources....
time will tell
Clarification: Katrina-Video story ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON (AP) _Most people who actually listened to the tapes knew the AP was lying. In a March 1 story, The Associated Press reported that federal disaster officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees in New Orleans, citing confidential video footage of an Aug. 28 briefing among U.S. officials.
The Army Corps of Engineers considers a breach a hole developing in a levee rather than an overrun. The story should have made clear that Bush was warned about floodwaters overrunning the levees, rather than the levees breaking.
The day before the storm hit, Bush was told there were grave concerns that the levees could be overrun. It wasn't until the next morning, as the storm was hitting, that Michael Brown, then head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said Bush had inquired about reports of breaches. Bush did not participate in that briefing.
That would be a demotion... promote him to JCOS or SECDEF.
