LONDONDERRY, Northern Ireland -- The United States must rebuild the power of the United Nations and help "end the empire of oil" if it wants to win the "war on terror," U.S. Sen. John Kerry said Sunday.
The Massachusetts Democrat avoided explicit criticisms of the Bush administration during a wide-ranging speech on the global dynamics of terror. But he said Bush's policy of imposing democracy in Iraq and Afghanistan risked looking like a crusade.
"If it is seen as the result of an army marching through Muslim lands, it will fail," Kerry told an audience at the University of Ulster campus in Londonderry, the second-largest city in Northern Ireland.
The "war on terror," Kerry said, was not principally about the U.S.-led military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, but was "fundamentally a war within Islam for the heart and soul of Islam, stretching from Morocco east to Indonesia."
Kerry, who lost to Bush in the 2004 presidential election, said today's myriad terrorist threats to security in the West and within Muslim nations themselves exist in part because "no center of moral authority has emerged to stop those who would murder in the name of Islam."
But Kerry suggested the current focus on American-led military interventions was not the way to promote stable democracies in the Middle East, a region of dictatorships underpinned by oil money. Sustainable political change required concerted international political pressure combined with appropriate development aid.
"Great American presidents, from Roosevelt to Truman to Kennedy, understood that success requires a community of nations working together, drawing strength from shared sacrifice and steadfast commitment to our shared ideals," he said.
Kerry said the UN must play a forceful role in places like Iraq and Darfur, referring to the western region of Sudan where Sudanese Arab militias have been wiping out black African communities with impunity.
"Literally, the West must reclaim its moral leadership," he said.
Developing effective replacements for oil-based fuels also was key, he said. The West's insatiable appetite for petroleum from the Middle East "has frustrated every impulse towards modernization of the region, while giving its regimes the resources to hold onto power. The international community of democratic nations cannot afford to continue funding both sides of the war on terror. We must end the empire of oil."
Kerry must be listening to his VVAW and Code Pink buddies too much again.

"LONDONDERRY, Northern Ireland -- The United States must rebuild the power of the United Nations and help "end the empire of oil" if it wants to win the "war on terror," U.S. Sen. John Kerry said Sunday."
Didn't Bush recently announce more research for alternate fuels ... that America must end its dependency on oil?
Where was Kerry and did he forget already? God, what a damn fool!
Sen. Kerry, why haven`t we seen your personal records from the Navy as you promised to release almost a year ago?
And what does the mighty thinker from the banks of the Charles River (Boston/Cambridge river, for those in Rio Linda), think the Middle East will do when nobody's interested in buying their oil? Hint: Other than rugs, it's their only product. They won't be happy.
In other words, substitute 'development aid' for oil money. It's blackmail, no matter which way you slice it.
BTW, you were quoted on the Sunday Morning Talk Show Thread by someone that said you "claim" to be in Iraq! Sorry, I should have pinged you to it.
Stay safe Old Sarge.
Sarge, I got just one thing to say to you:
YOU'RE A GREAT AMERICAN!!!!!

"Literally, the West must reclaim its moral leadership"
"The international community of democratic nations..."
Well which is it old boy? The West can not reclaim its moral leadership with the most immoral invention that ever existed...the UN. The UN is not made up of a "community of democratic nations", but a boat load of dictatorships and despots.
The why doesn't he [and all those other liberal twits] support the wind farm off Martha's Vinyard? Oh, that's right, spoil the view.
Thanks for your comments.
This disgusting behavior is getting too repetitive. As another poster pointed out, the criticism of a sitting president in foreign countries is a mark of third-rate cowards.
I believe that promise was made JANUARY 30, 2005.
More than that. It should be grounds for a treason prosecution.
Hello, Justanobody. Trust you are doing well this evening.
Thank God the American people wisely chose Pres. Bush in the 2004 elections. If this idi0t (Kerry) were in charge, the USA would be holding "peace" talks with OBL in Paris right now.
John, where's Form 180?
"Claim"? Oh, hardee-har-HAR!
I gotta see THAT!
And while we're at it, I'd like to hear Fat Teddy's version of how to make cars float.
he sounds like some freepers here that i have been debating.
ACK
I can NOT even think about that no good %&()^%$#%*)_*&^%##&*O((*^$##%@%$$^*()_$#@ winning any election, least of all '04. I will move to MA to work for his opponent in '08 if the Republicans are smart enough to challenge him.
Or kill birds and then PETA would have him in their sights. WHAT A LOOSER!!!
I'll find it for you and be right back!
Got it - it was benign.
If one wishes for everlasting peace, then one must prepare for war!
I'll but that. Thank God we do have a truly honorable man in the White House who isn't driven by popular opinion or who loses his focus on the big picture because of it.
Oil has absolutely played a major part in funding global Islamic terrorism. However, oil just enables. It does not cause terrorism. Something more sinister causes terrorism. Some call blame it on poverty, some blame it on mass ignorance and insecurity, and some blame it in religion. I tend to go for the last one.
Islamist rhetoric is definitely the root cause of terrorism world-wide. Oil money just facilitates the wild and evil rhetoric coming from the literal interpretation of Islamic literature. If there was no oil and Middle Eastern countries exported sand(for example) and funded their Jihadists. And people would be blaming the world's lust for sand for fueling terrorism, while totally overlooking the most critical factor.
Just my opinion, of course.
i think he makes some good points, but don't believe the UN is the answer. And also, his points about oil will not reduce the terrorism, it's certain regimes that opress their people that seems to cause the problem. Look at Kuwait, they use their oil
profits to help their people and share the wealth, although this isn't very good since most of Kuwaitis don't work and their work ethic is horrible, I feel less of them are probably
a threat and would think twice before taking $2000 to blow themselves up. Pretty complex issue.
Excellent points all, Sagar. Thanks for sharing.

"If it is seen as the result of an army marching through Muslim lands, it will fail,"
Kerry thinks the HOLY LANDS are MUSLIM..(I guess)..HISTORY SAYS THEY ARE NOT!! THE CRUSADES WERE ABOUT TAKING OUR OWN LANDS BACK FROM THE BARBARIANS! I guess Kerry has a prob with that..just like he had a prob with protecting the world from communism and marxism!
Kerry has a secret plan to modify vehicles to run on catsup.
Kerry's head is up his ass. Always has been.
Kerry's head is up his ass. Always has been.
WAKEUP AMERICA!
For those who "forgot" what Hanoi Kerry
did in the past read on and learn the truth.
Hanoi Kerry was still a USNR officer while he:
gave false hearsay testimony to Congress
negotiated with the enemy
helped the US lose a war
abetted in the deaths of millions
created a hostile environment for all servicemen
Why is Kerry still in the US Senate?
This is in violation of
U.S. Constitution Amendment 14 Sec 3 (1868)
Section 3. No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress,
or elector of President and Vice President,
or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States,
or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath,
as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States,
or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer
of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States,
shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same,
or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.
But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

I wish someone would give Kerry a good beating. Oh wait, Bush already did that. OK, maybe a punch in the mouth.
Can the President order the release of personal records?
Bump for this post
He's the Commander-In-Chief, I suspect that he can if he deems it to be in the national interest, and considering Kerry's lies and fabrications about everything under the sun, I think setting the record straight is most DEFINITELY in the national interest. ;)
I can see that kerry is sad that there will be no civil war LOL
Does Kerry ever stay in the U.S.? He should run for office in the U.N., not the U.S.
