CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Protests are planned for Monday in the same area of campus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where, authorities said, a former student plowed a sport utility vehicle into nine people Friday afternoon.
The College Republicans, Americans for an Informed Democracy and the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies are sponsoring the event, scheduled for 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday in "The Pit," a central area of the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. The event is open to the public and free of charge.
Police said Mohammad Taheri-azar, a 2005 UNC-Chapel Hill graduate, admits he acted to "avenge the death of Muslims around the world." UNC police and local authorities, however, say they have not taken a stance on that interpretation, but are simply repeating what the suspect has told them.
UNC-Chapel Hill student leaders said that Monday's protest is aimed at the reluctance of the university to label Friday's incident as an act of terrorism.
"This is innocent people being attacked by an SUV, driven by a man who was doing it for retaliation for treatment of Muslims around the world," said Jillian Bandes, with the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. "To me, that spells terrorism."
...
Because of what Taheri-azar admitted to local authorities, the FBI is also participating in the investigation. FBI spokesman Ken Lucas said Sunday, however, that a federal investigation is still ongoing.
But were Taheri-azar's alleged actions acts of terrorism?
"I think (what Taheri-azar did) is extreme," said Dan VanAtta, a friend of the suspect. "But then again, I don't know what was going through his head. Mohammed was a good guy."
...
"(They should) understand the roots of it and understand the strategies for addressing it in a constructive way," Schanzer said.

He's a chicken $shit coward.

....WTF?? It looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and walks like a duck but police are making no judgment on what this may be.
Okay, let's break it down:
Muslim named Mohammed - Tool of Islamic fundamentalism
SUV - Tool of capitalist planet-rapers
"The Pit" - Tool of decadent western students
Sounds like an exercise of First Amendment rights to me.

Do the crime and do the time. No one cares what is going on in your head, and it shouldn't matter. The title could well read, excuses for crime. I don't want no stinking excuses, you did it, were deporting your A**, After the punishment of course, unless of course he is a citizen, in which case he needs a lobotomy and reeducation. I ask the rhetorical question in all seriousness, what American, can justify being associated with the muslim religion, especially in todays world, and still regard him or herself an American? The acronym AINO might generally and specifically apply.
It is amusing--and encouraging--to watch students confront them with Truth.
The students will likely not succeed in enlightening their "teachers." Leftists are blinded by denial and hubris, and nothing can force the hubritic and those in denial to accept Truth.
(Never underestimate the power of denial--or the shallowness of the Left.)
However it is fun to watch the role reversal at play here. The students are teaching. The "teachers" refuse to learn.
Oh, I think we've got that one figured out.
Too bad it wasn't a hot lead slug from a .357 magnum.
Islam is not a religion,
It is a ideology based on world domination masquerading as a religion.
No other religion requires total submission or death.
Islam does.!
ISLAM IS TERRORISM BY IT'S VERY NATURE
Schanzer, the head of the UNC terrorist/Homeland security is quoted in the article as saying "I think it was a terroristic act." Like DUH...what was his first clue? Could it be the folks this terrorist ran over, or perhaps his statements afterwards? What's there to "think" about?
ISLAM IS fascism BY IT'S VERY NATURE
IMHO, the only thing that should have gone through his head is a hunk of brass and lead that weighs about 200 grains!
Mark
I am in NC on business quite often and UNC Wilmington has an extreme reputation as a very liberal school. I can't figure out what is going on there.
He turned himself in, I really don't see it as a "terrorist attack". Yea, since he made those statements the FBI needs to check his computer at home and see if he's involved in something and he also needs to be charged for these crimes, I just don't see it as a "terrorist act", if they can link him to a cell or organization then I will change my mind.
a question on this: if a non-us citizen does something like this, and one of the actions the US would take is deportation, will the US at least first make the person do the time before deportation?
to do otherwise would not make sense, but then again....
"I don't want no stinking excuses, you did it, were deporting your A**,"
Deportation only assists in sending them back to terrorist training...unless you are sending them on their dream cruise with their 72 virgins.

j,
The animal in question also said he's a duck.
I don't get how someone can attack 9 people, say it was done in the name of religious vengeance, but authorities can't decide whether it's terroristic.
Hey! If the perp's skin is light enough and some victim's skin is dark enough, it could be a hate crime.
Wait a sec, the perp isn't a Christian.
Nevermind.
Good for them!!! I was hoping they would do this!!!
Now what would put the cherry on this for me, is if they call on whichever LEA is really to charge this terrorist for EVERY STUDENT THAT WAS IN THE PIT, NOT JUST THOSE WHO WERE HIT.
Didn't UNC catch some flack a few years ago for having the Koran on its suggested reading list for incoming freshmen?
Well, from the reports I read he called police and turned himself in, terrorist usually don't do that... The FBI needs to investigate the heck out of this guy and he needs to be tried and go to jail. If they can link him to a cell or organization, then it can be classified as a "terrorist act" if not he's just a crazy man, and needs to be locked up along with all the other crazy men in jail.
I couldn't put your quote with what he said earlier in the article:
'"David Schanzer, the director of the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security at Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill, said it is fine for students to voice their dismay, but that they should be cautious.
"(They should) understand the roots of it and understand the strategies for addressing it in a constructive way," Schanzer said.'
What is THIS supposed to mean???
I'm so glad these students decided to hold the line (or draw a line, whatever the case may be)!
He's lucky it wasn't a 158 grain jacketed hollow point.
He didn't attack 9 people. He attacked more than that-
He only happened to hit 9.
Damn, beat me to it. I need to read the whole thread before posting my comments. There are just too many people around here who share my thought processes.
Yes.
I think that the actual action was terrorism - if only becuase he went after innocents *and* it will force others to take protective action (look for more of those ugly concrete barricades to go up at universities around the country...). What I'd like to know - and I'm sure that the FBI would, as well - is if this is the act of a lone kook, or if there's more to it.
I'm tending towards the former, for the same reasons that you stated. He turned himself in, and that's not the action of a jihadist.
I don't know, I think hes a kook.. a terrorist would hav been throwing bombs out the windows and shooting a shotgun or something... and he sure as heck wouln't have turned himself in. "terrorist action"? They would have to convince me with more info.
Is there a difference between an act of jihad and an act of extremist Islamic terrorism? Sure. But whether or not this was a sponsored act or not makes no difference in my book.
I'm not into splitting hairs over it.
That's Islam's role.
And we are very fortunate no one was killed, that the first 9 students he hit stopped the car, and that he didn't have a gun or a bomb.
Would not surprise me at all. they are legendary libs in the heart of NC, doesn't make any sense at all.
UNC has a new campus in the ME.
UNC has a close connection with the ME.
UNC probably has significant financial endowments from the ME.
UNC doesn't want to upset their apple cart.
No.
I believe it is a required reading list.
I spent a fair amount of time thinking about this last Friday, right after it happened. I think the perp did a good job ambushing his victims. Even if there had been a student there with concealed carry going on, realistically how likely is it that good guy could have put a slug into the bad guy amidst a few seconds of disorder?
No, unless the answers to the following questions are 'yes'.
1. Was he Muslim?
2. Was Indiana/USA engaged in a global conflict with enemy Muslim combatants?
hmm.. some crazy terrorism and muslim boy laundering at UNC going on...
Me think liberals are in so deep in laundering and terror laundering politics, they are afraid to mention the truth.
I say it's time America came together, held hands & started cutting the liberal crap and dealt with these issues seriously.
might be more likely next time.
will anyone take over a plane with a box cutter?
He only happened to hit 9.
Yeah, I noticed this too. Shouldn't he be charged with attempted murder for all the people in the area and not just the 9 he actually hit?
I get your point...not ever again, at least not when Americans are on the plane.
What is the annalogy with shooting a place up? What does the law say about aiming at someone and missing completely, but firing nonetheless?
"hmm.. some crazy terrorism and muslim boy laundering at UNC going on..."
The Erskin Bowles Laundromat
But it looks like the College Republicans are going to do a load of dirty laundry.
Damn straight.
Stuck on stupid? or scared?
If a Muslim robs a convient store and kills the clerk is that a "terrorist act" and does that make him a "terrorist" or just a kook and murder like everyone else that does the same thing?
Get a clue
Are you answering a question with a question ? )
"This is innocent people being attacked by an SUV a man, driven by a man driving an SUV....."
There, fixed it. Geez! She must be a journalism major.
