Students To Protest UNC's Reluctance To Label Pit Incident Terrorism
WRAL-TV ^ | V

Posted on 03/06/2006 4:33:36 AM PST by NCjim

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Protests are planned for Monday in the same area of campus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where, authorities said, a former student plowed a sport utility vehicle into nine people Friday afternoon.

The College Republicans, Americans for an Informed Democracy and the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies are sponsoring the event, scheduled for 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday in "The Pit," a central area of the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

Police said Mohammad Taheri-azar, a 2005 UNC-Chapel Hill graduate, admits he acted to "avenge the death of Muslims around the world." UNC police and local authorities, however, say they have not taken a stance on that interpretation, but are simply repeating what the suspect has told them.

UNC-Chapel Hill student leaders said that Monday's protest is aimed at the reluctance of the university to label Friday's incident as an act of terrorism.

"This is innocent people being attacked by an SUV, driven by a man who was doing it for retaliation for treatment of Muslims around the world," said Jillian Bandes, with the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. "To me, that spells terrorism."

...

Because of what Taheri-azar admitted to local authorities, the FBI is also participating in the investigation. FBI spokesman Ken Lucas said Sunday, however, that a federal investigation is still ongoing.

But were Taheri-azar's alleged actions acts of terrorism?

"I think (what Taheri-azar did) is extreme," said Dan VanAtta, a friend of the suspect. "But then again, I don't know what was going through his head. … Mohammed was a good guy."

...

"(They should) understand the roots of it and understand the strategies for addressing it in a constructive way," Schanzer said.

Okay, let's break it down:

Muslim named Mohammed - Tool of Islamic fundamentalism

SUV - Tool of capitalist planet-rapers

"The Pit" - Tool of decadent western students

Sounds like an exercise of First Amendment rights to me.

Do the crime and do the time. No one cares what is going on in your head, and it shouldn't matter. The title could well read, excuses for crime. I don't want no stinking excuses, you did it, were deporting your A**, After the punishment of course, unless of course he is a citizen, in which case he needs a lobotomy and reeducation. I ask the rhetorical question in all seriousness, what American, can justify being associated with the muslim religion, especially in todays world, and still regard him or herself an American? The acronym AINO might generally and specifically apply.

Leftists--including those who dominate academia--abhor Truth. It frightens them, and it coflicts with their mindless agenda.

It is amusing--and encouraging--to watch students confront them with Truth.

The students will likely not succeed in enlightening their "teachers." Leftists are blinded by denial and hubris, and nothing can force the hubritic and those in denial to accept Truth.

(Never underestimate the power of denial--or the shallowness of the Left.)

However it is fun to watch the role reversal at play here. The students are teaching. The "teachers" refuse to learn.

Islam is not a religion,
It is a ideology based on world domination masquerading as a religion.
No other religion requires total submission or death.
Islam does.!

Schanzer, the head of the UNC terrorist/Homeland security is quoted in the article as saying "I think it was a terroristic act." Like DUH...what was his first clue? Could it be the folks this terrorist ran over, or perhaps his statements afterwards? What's there to "think" about?

Yea, since he made those statements the FBI needs to check his computer at home and see if he's involved in something and he also needs to be charged for these crimes, I just don't see it as a "terrorist act", if they can link him to a cell or organization then I will change my mind.

a question on this: if a non-us citizen does something like this, and one of the actions the US would take is deportation, will the US at least first make the person do the time before deportation?

to do otherwise would not make sense, but then again....

The animal in question also said he's a duck.

I don't get how someone can attack 9 people, say it was done in the name of religious vengeance, but authorities can't decide whether it's terroristic.

hmm yes the question of deportation I suppose would come into play after such time as a custodial sentence was served. Maybe at Gitmo given his reason for the offense in the first place

Well, from the reports I read he called police and turned himself in, terrorist usually don't do that... The FBI needs to investigate the heck out of this guy and he needs to be tried and go to jail. If they can link him to a cell or organization, then it can be classified as a "terrorist act" if not he's just a crazy man, and needs to be locked up along with all the other crazy men in jail.

I couldn't put your quote with what he said earlier in the article:

'"David Schanzer, the director of the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security at Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill, said it is fine for students to voice their dismay, but that they should be cautious.

"(They should) understand the roots of it and understand the strategies for addressing it in a constructive way," Schanzer said.'

What is THIS supposed to mean???

I'm so glad these students decided to hold the line (or draw a line, whatever the case may be)!

I really don't see it as a "terrorist attack".

I think that the actual action was terrorism - if only becuase he went after innocents *and* it will force others to take protective action (look for more of those ugly concrete barricades to go up at universities around the country...). What I'd like to know - and I'm sure that the FBI would, as well - is if this is the act of a lone kook, or if there's more to it.

I'm tending towards the former, for the same reasons that you stated. He turned himself in, and that's not the action of a jihadist.

Is there a difference between an act of jihad and an act of extremist Islamic terrorism? Sure. But whether or not this was a sponsored act or not makes no difference in my book.

I'm not into splitting hairs over it.

That's Islam's role.

And we are very fortunate no one was killed, that the first 9 students he hit stopped the car, and that he didn't have a gun or a bomb.

UNC has a close connection with the ME.

UNC probably has significant financial endowments from the ME.

I grew up in NW Indiana and was just looking for a link to this incident but couldn't find one.. But, when I was growing up a guy attacked the K-Mart in the town, a girl i went to school with her dad was injured very bad in the attack. He(the attacker) walked into the K-Mart parking lot and freaked out with a HK-91 and starting shooting people and shooting into the store. After he ran out of ammo he ran across the street and tried to hide behind some buildings(where i guess he had more ammo) the police showed up and killed the guy. This was like oh i don't know 20 years ago. Was this a "terrorist act"? The guy was said to be a white male loner and depressed.

I spent a fair amount of time thinking about this last Friday, right after it happened. I think the perp did a good job ambushing his victims. Even if there had been a student there with concealed carry going on, realistically how likely is it that good guy could have put a slug into the bad guy amidst a few seconds of disorder?
