Maybe in your neck of the woods, but lots of places don't have Trader Joes. I already see a LOT of rich people at the WalMart I shop in...the parking lot is full of their cars... they are the first to know a good deal when they see one, that's how they got to be rich in the first place.

Yep. One is filled with recent immigrants shoving eachother (in Urdu, Somali, Russian, and Spanish) for the $100 DVD Multidisk player, the other one filled with Tweakers and folks who just rolled out of the trailer park.

I know that Wal Marts do attract folks from across the spectrum, but in my area (currently in the Seattle area) they do not. I still believe that they are making a mistake in trying to pick off new demo groups instead of focusing on and IMPROVING their core business model.

Are you aware of the burgeoning organic food market? There's $$ to be made. WalMart's not stupid. Look at the proliferation of organic food stores opening across the country. People are paying higher prices, gladly, for something perceived as healthier. Like consumers of non-organic foods, customers will buy at WalMart rather than at Whole Foods or EarthFare based on price.

20lb jars of Tofu?

LOL!!!

I just interviewed at a college town w/o a Trader Joes but w/a big Wally World. Not everywhere has choice when it comes to organic foods. Personally, a lot of food coops look like dumps and the prices are way too high. I'd at least take a look at what WalMart offered if I take a job in that town.

Can do w/o the 20 lbs of tofu though, can hardly get through 1 lb on my own. : )

I am very skeptical of Walmart getting into this. They may try to weaken organic standards as they try to weaken everything else for the sake of money.

True, but at the same time it may help increase the profitabilty of raising organic produce and drive down the prices.

Good point. I was telling petronski that I don't think I'd be doing much shopping in Walmart. Maybe I'll have to see what they're offering next time.
