China must stop cruelty to animals, delegates say

BEIJING, March 7 (Reuters) - China, which has come under fire from abroad for widespread cruelty to bears, dogs and other creatures, needs a law to protect animals from abuse, delegates to China's parliament said on Tuesday.

International animal rights groups have criticised China for cruelty to bears kept on farms for their bile. The say millions of animals raised for their pelts are mistreated, including cats and dogs, and inhumanely killed.

"We should impose a law to curb animal abuse and brutal slaughter as soon as possible," the official Xinhua news agency quoted Du Yi, a businesswoman with a Hong-Kong based company and delegate of the advisory body to parliament, as saying.

"Some animal abuse cases have hurt the feelings of animal lovers and tainted China's image of civilisation," she said.

The government should crack down on the theft, butchering and processing of pets for commercial purpose, and reduce the pain of fowl and livestock as they are killed, she added.

Raising dogs was banned under the rule of late Chinese leader Mao Zedong as a bourgeois pastime and was only made legal a few years ago as living standards rose.

While more people have the means to raise pets, many do not have the will to provide long-term care.

Some dogs and cats end up being killed for their fur in barbaric conditions, crammed into cages which are then thrown on to the ground, shattering their bones, according to animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Early this month, a series of pictures of a smiling young woman apparently killing a cat with her high-heeled shoes appeared on some Chinese Internet Web sites, sparking outrage among animal lovers.

No charges can be brought against her, as there are no laws covering cruelty to animals.

Why don't they start with their people, first?

The way to stop Chinas cruelty to animals is to figure out why Chinese men can`t get it up. Everything and it`s mother is a "aphrodisiac" to the Chinese, Bear gall baldder, shark guts on a stick, bat ears on a pole.. Go to Chinatown here in NYC and it never ends....If they saw road kill they`d lick it up to see if it gets them hard. I mean what is the problem here? Or is there even a problem? The reproduction rate of China rivals that of rabbits on viagra.

Is this for real?! It almost makes me laugh! Considering after their first born child all others are thrown into a trashcan and Clinton still had them designated Most Favored Nation to all approvals.

Got to start from somewhere. Too much animal cruelty is a sign of too much secularism too, and is one step away from cruelty on humans. If PETA would spend all its efforts on China, it might just end most of the animal cruelty in the world, instead they waste their time and money in developed western nations.

If PETA would spend all its efforts on China and leave us alone, that would make me very, very happy.

LOL. Chinese have a pretty low fertility rate today (1.72 children born/women). Most working Chinese in the cities prefer to have only one child regardless of the one-child policy (one-child policy since the late 1990s has been toned down quite a bit, it's been reduced to just a fine).

The aphrodisiac obsession is confined to one specific subset of the Chinese population, the southern Cantonese, which unfortunately dominate Chinatowns in the US.

They are cruel SOB`s though.... The worst video I ever seen was one of the Chinese skinning dogs alive and throwing them into a cart. The dogs would roll their eyes, open and close their mouths in absolute agony, and they were all piled on top of each other and these Chinese were just acting like it was nothing, like they were making popcorn. At least kill the mutts, what is the purpose of letting them die slow? Is it some sort of frustration of not having the guts to take down the commie scum who rule them so they take it out on defenseless animals? What is the problem there, something in the order of 1.4 billion people? With that amount you could even take down the iron clad liberal press in the US never mind a bunch of midget Kim Ills, speaking of which I heard that is exactly what they are preparing for in Korea. Here in NYC I deal with tons of Koreans everyday who hate the guys guts. I tell them do it quick before Jimmy Carter comes to his defense.

Yeah, they were making dog coats or whatever, it was the sickest thing I ever seen in my life all the same. The Chinese don`t see dogs the same way we see them (if you are from the US).. They see them the way we see chickens or pigs. On the other hand to get and idea of it other cultures see pigs as we see dogs such as Muslims who get sick of the even thought of eating a pig. If there is anything I agree with Muslims about, it is about pigs. If you think dogs are the smartest animal on earth, you ain`t ever seen a pig. My cousin raised them in Virginia for about 20 years, and to this day I swear if those animals had the physical structure to talk they would. When I was about 12 years old there was one pig in particular they called Spunk who was like a little kid, same IQ... You would tell him to do anything and he would do it. Change the Tv station, get his food from the fridge, make his bed, go outside, and they never trained him! He picked up the language just by listening! Very bizarre, but I still like my pork chops ha ha!

They should. But you got to think that some of that animal-loving will carry into human-loving too. Sometimes compassion can be contagious. Unnecessary cruelty toward animals often carry into human interactions too. I'm obviously not supporting animal-loving to the level of PETA, there are extremes to everything.

I saw only a a little bit of a video that showed the Chinese cruelty to cats and dogs....it was so horrible that I had nightmares for weeks. It was heartless treatment of innocent animals (and I'm no animal rights activist...I can't STAND peta...idiots...wasting their money here instead of putting it all in China).

I made a vow to not purchase anything made in China....and I have done pretty well. I have to remember to pick up everthing to read labels, flip things over to see where things are made....it is pretty depressing how much stuff is 'Made In China'. Although I am on a fixed income and am paying more for things made either in the US or other countries, I will continue to boycott China (and have gotten some others to do it also) until they pass and enforce laws against animal cruelty. They're freakin' barbarians.

Whoa, Even China has its limits. I bet PETA would end up in a political gulag, Be stalked by Chinese Agents, Who call themselves Agents. Go thru torture, execution, forced labor and force to unethically treat animals with their own hands.
