State officials issued an air pollution health advisory Wednesday for the Twin Cities metro area that extends through today.
Relatively light winds, high moisture levels and fog have allowed fine particles such as soot to accumulate, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency warned. The fine particles, as small as one-fiftieth the width of a human hair, can enter the lungs and cause breathing difficulties.

Any Twin Cities Freepers (or Freepers who may find themselves in the Twin Cities today), be careful and don't get sick!
We live with these for months and months nearly every winter in the Phoenix area. Seen from the mountains the city looks encased in a yellowish fuggle. Nasty.
Really?
Is the Phoenix area surrounded by mountains...kinda like Los Angeles is?
Yes. Phoenix is more or less situated in a basin between low mountain ranges. Thermal inversions happen frequently and, without high altitude winds, the air inside the basin gets stirred around and around but remains essentially in the same place. Dust from construction sites gets tossed into the air and combines with industrial smoke and vehicle exhaust to create an ugly pollution soup which can hang in the air for weeks.
I see this when I'm working on top of the southern ridge in places like Eagan . You can see a the smog occasionally from up there when the wind is light. Also saw the same thing in Rochester last fall. Kinda surprising for a prairie town.
Hard to believe.
