Well, Lee's Army of Northern Virginia held out against for several years scoring impressive victories, but was eventually fighting a defensive war against an army with far superior industry, resources, and sheer manpower. You should really read DiLorenzo's The Real Lincoln and the works of Shelby Steele on the Civil War.
On a lighter note, we have more of a case than ever to break away from the union and damn it, what sort of army is Ted Kennedy's state going to muster that'd even come close...industry....the unions and politicans almost killed it off...and they want to "preserve" the environment...so resources would be off limits. I'd say it go pretty well the second time and I get tickled at thinking at the sort of misfits we'd have to fight...perhaps them four women who played gay guys on that show called Sex And the City.

On a purely hypothetical note, could you imagine the caterwauling that would go on in the "North" today if they had to fight the Civil War, especially if it divided along Red/Blue state lines? I would imagine that most of the "Red" Western states would join a secession movement from the "enlightened Blue" "North". It would be rather funny to watch the anti-war Norther elite-types struggling between the desire to preserve the "Union" and their pacifist "principles".
