FCC: CBS facing $3.6M fine for indecency

A government crackdown on indecent programming resulted in a proposed fine of $3.6 million against dozens of CBS stations and affiliates on Wednesday - a record penalty from the Federal Communications Commission.

The FCC said an episode of the CBS crime drama "Without a Trace" that aired in December 2004 was indecent. It cited the graphic depiction of "teenage boys and girls participating in a sexual orgy."

CBS said it strongly disagrees with the FCC's finding.

The program "featured an important and socially relevant storyline warning parents to exercise greater supervision of their teenage children. The program was not unduly graphic or explicit," the network said in a statement.

Haven't watched CBS since the last episode of MASH, never watch broadcast tv, it's pure garbage.

Except American Idol, that's good garbage.

I have seen one episode and I wasn't all that impressed and haven't watched an episode since. In their defense this show is normally on at 10 pm and there are parental codes that go with the program. If I choose, I can block programs either using my tv settings or my cable box settings, but I choose not to. Nobody is forced to watch anything and I think the FCC goes too far some times even though I am no big fan of cBS.

Why aren't the producers being charged with Child Porno laws. "Orgies of kids" sounds pretty much against the law to film.

Nevermind that Oprah has a show every other week talking about all kinds of sex acts. I guess Oprah can say what she wants and the rest of us "litte people" are only subject to laws. All hail queen oprah

Expect television networks to fight for their life by broadcasting X-rated porn in the near future. A ploy destined to fail because porn addicts can already use the Inet 24X7 to watch the hardest core porn on the planet without commercial interruption.

The show was on at ten, it was likely rated "M," the V-chip would solve the problem, and the people who saw this either wanted to or didn't care enough to stop their kids from seeing it to program their damn t.v.'s. If people don't like this crap on t.v., they ought not to watch it. I don't want the FCC nannies forcing every show to a Mr. Rogers' content level because some people are too lazy to change the channel or too stupid to program a t.v. set or both.

I don't like the idea of government censors when every Tom, Dick, and Hank in this country has a remote control with an off button. Sounds like a perfect environment for a rugged individualistic solution.

The agency's proposed fine for "Without a Trace" covers broadcasts aired at 9 p.m. in the Central and Mountain time zones.

It appears that they can show it after ten p.m.

Somebody fergot 'bout them time zones...

Careful what you wish for. The "Fairness Doctrine" is the next door down. Then we get an hour of Lynn Samuels (Bush set up 9/11 for political advantage) for every hour of Rush.

I saw that episode and it truly was pornography. If teenagers are really participating in group sex and considering it completely normal, this country is in big trouble. The sex scenes in this show would have been shocking if the actors were adults. But, for teenagers to be portrayed this was really was horrible.

Careful what you wish for.

If any of the actors were under 18 cBS is liable under the sexual abuse of minors act in Maryland and most other states, as well as the Federal indecency charges.
