West Texas Group Out Of Running For Bush Library

(March 16, 2006)—Baylor University, Southern Methodist University and the University of Dallas were still in the running for the George W. Bush Presidential Library Thursday, but a site backed by a group led by Texas Tech University has been eliminated.

Selection committee chairman Donald Evans says committee members appreciated the West Texas group's plan, but have decided to narrow their search to the other three proposals.

The West Texas Coalition was a partnership between Texas Tech in Lubbock and Midland College.

Last fall, the city of Arlington, Texas A&M and the University of Texas System were eliminated as potential sites.

The cost to build the library is estimated between $200 million and $300 million.

The library will be financed with private donations.

The President and First Lady will have the final decision on the site.

Baylor has been working on its proposal for several years and has purchased more than 100 acres on the banks of the Brazos River as a potential site for the library.

The White House isn’t saying where the library is likely to be built, but insiders have suggested that SMU, which is the First Lady’s alma mater, is the frontrunner.

However the President’s ranch near Crawford is only about 30 miles from the Baylor campus in Waco.

Wonder if Dubai will offer a donation. Not that I see anything wrong , except anything clinton is involved in/with raises an eyebrow. But wouldn't it be the kicker if clinton gets a cut.

George HW and Barbara reportedly spend a lot of time in College Station and it will be interesting to see if GW and Laura actually retire to Crawford. They lived in the Dallas area when he was involved with the Texas Rangers and I would not be surprised to see them return there as it isn't very far from Dallas to Waco and Crawford. My guess is the library will go to SMU, Laura's alma mater.

Could you please clarify your post? I have no idea why Clinton would be involved in this.

I agree, although it would be great for Waco to get the library!

I was being flip - Dubai contributed to the clinton Library --- and as far as I know there are no problems with other countries donating - I've never paid attention to it. Now for what may have distrubed you .....

clinton is on the payroll of Dubai and meaning to be flip I just wondered if Dubai donates to President Bush's Library would clinton get a percentage ---- clinton making money off Dubai really bugs me.

I look forward to visiting both of their Libraries in Texas. I'm so very proud of President George W. Bush and support him with one exception --- the border issue ---- but have faith President Bush knows what is the right thing to do.

Maybe it will end up being an oil issue what with Mexico finding that 'gusher'. Since we can't drill in Alaska.
