Four New Orleans police officers have been cleared of allegations that they looted a Wal-Mart store after Hurricane Katrina, but each was suspended 10 days for not stopping civilians from ransacking the store, the Police Department said.
The probe stemmed from an MSNBC report that showed the officers filling a shopping cart with shoes, clothes and other items.
When a reporter asked the officers what they were doing, one responded, "Looking for looters" and turned her back.
Assistant Police Chief Marlon Defillo, commander of the Public Integrity Bureau, said the officers seen on the video were recently cleared of looting because they had received permission from superiors to take necessities for themselves and other officers.
Fontenot received an additional three-day penalty for her "discourteous" response to the MSNBC correspondent...

Just another day in Chocolate City
"Who ya gonna believe, me, or your own lying eyes?!"
What BS!!!
Who are we gonna believe him...or our lying eyes!
LOL....trust me...I had NOT read your response before I posted mine.
Their "superiors" don't have the authority to authorize them to loot, only the manager of the store or a person from Walmart corporate has the authority to allow that. It's not theirs to give away.
I guess we didn't see what we were seeing.....we can't believe our lying eyes....
Yesss....Yessss....52 inch plasma TV's, DVD players, Video games and movies are necessities.....
I don't know how my gold fish got in the blender!
Amazing isn't this...considering all of the grief that Congress and the public have given President Bush for his "incompetent"handling of Katrina...
That this would just be not only tolerated...but the powers that be are LYING to make excuses for their crooked COPS!
If I were one of the dozen or so candidates for Mayor of New Orleans....I would make a point of saying that what the police did is unacceptable...and excusing them is even worse..and promise to FIRE all of them.
When the police investigate themselves, this is what happens.
The police don't like to make the police look bad, even when the police have made the police look bad.
Two looting investigations involving police remain under investigation by federal authorities...
One involves the theft of about 200 vehicles from Sewell Cadillac Chevrolet and allegations that 3rd District commanders were involved in some of the thefts.
The other involves a complaint from a hotel owner that a group of officers from the now-disbanded Community Policing squad kept a large stash of goods in one of the rooms.
I just can't believe this....we all watched this and they were caught red-handed......just pathetic and you are right....they have and continue to ridicule the President over Katrina, but they let people like this get away with crimes...
Billy Tauzen's famous "Half of Louisiana is under water, the other half is under indictment."...
;'}
Scum town is right, only thing worse is a lot of other cities now have them forever, like roaches
One would think that New Orleans would like to put its corrupt policies of the past behind them, but with this type of decision, it seems to me that they want to keep the corruption with them as they go forward.
"the other half is under indictment."...
LOL! Got a good chuckle out of that one!
What is to be expected when those investigating the crimes are just as big in the criminal world as the ones being investigated. This is a literal application of the "let he who is without guilt cast the first stone". As those who were doing the investigating were just as guilty, they didn't feel it was right to "convict" those CAUGHT ON TAPE OBVIOUSLY AND WITH AN ATTITUDE LOOTING the WalMart.
From now on, anyone in the NO area who wants to walk out of WalMart with a basket full of merchandise without paying should legally be entitled to it. Isn't there a legal precident involving "equal protection". If it's not wrong for police officers to steal, then it's not wrong for the "average Joe".
This just makes me so sick in so many ways....

Pathetic.
Okey, dokey! That explains everything. It only LOOKED like looting on TV. It's OK to loot if you have permission from your superiors. I guess you'd have to be NOPD to understand.
They had permission to put that big screen TV in the back of the stolen Caddilac?
Therefore, according to the police logic, the missing (stolen) 200 Cadillacs and Chevys were ok...too.
That last sentence shows an interesting interpretation of the law.
The NRA and SAF took them to court over that. The city at first denied they'd confiscated any firearms. Now they've agreed to return the guns they didn't confiscate. Don't know that they've actually returned any yet. I'm sure proving that a firearm is actually yours could be a bit difficult, since even if you had a bill of sale, there'd be a good chance that it would be a might soggy and hard to read. Of course there is no requirement to actually have one, I've got at least two firearms for which I never had one, and two others that I've had for over 20 years, and wouldn't have a clue where the BoS is, although I likely did keep it. Plus I've moved 5 times in that period, and things tend to get a bit scrambled when you move.
Of course if they had any clothing in their cart, it wasn't obvious. Maybe a few pairs of tennis shoes and of course those spike heals are great for wading in the swamp slime.
"They did not steal anything."
Like they were going to return it later. 8-))
Just borrowing.../s
The pictures, videos, and reports of police looting are well documented.
Just like the many school buses and city metro buses that were never used...lots of proof there, too.
I suspect if you said that, within the next couple of days you'd find yourself pulled over for "erratic driving", roughed up a bit, and then jailed for "resisting arrest." As any third world nation, New Orleans has at least as much rule by law as it does rule of law.
And they want my tax dollars to rebuild? Gimme a break.
Makes me want to go to N.O. for a vacation and spend my money knowing I'll be safely protected by the local law enforcement officers.
Anyone ever hear what became of the hundreds of ficticious cops that were getting paid? And maybe who was getting that money?
Are the N.O. police saying that it is ok to loot (steal) from any business if your get permission from a police supervisor ?
Not even prior permission...just any permission any time ?
The whole country watched these thieves steal and now we learn they get away with it. But was there really any doubt they would? They have a friggin excuse for everything they do. Intelligent people know what they witnessed. The ignorant will continue to let these leeches from hell get away with it and make excuses for them. She (the main one that talked to the reporter while stealing) is nothing but a fat pig who probably taught her own kids to steal to get whatever they want, whenever they want just as her parents did. It is THEIR way of life.
of course they were.
next headline: "water cleared of charges of being wet"
OMG. Un-friggin-believable...
Not surprised by it. What do you expect out of NOPD, which is the most corrupt.
She got narsty at being accosted by the reporter because she had to loot faster than the rest of the looters in order to get anything good.
1.) Was that verbal permission or is it in writing??If in writing ,Can we see it.
2.) Who issued that permission???
3.) They need to come before the cameras and explain themselves.
It certainly would be interesting to know what Walmart's recorded losses were and how much (notice I did not say, 'if') they received FEMA funds for 'storm damages'.
Wouldn't this fall under the RICO statutes?
And this "permission" was given when?
It should fall under RICO.
No supervisor has the authority to grant permission to steal.
They all should go to jail.
