LISTEN TO ANDREW: WILKOW on WABC

http://www.wabcradio.com/

THE NEXT GENERATION OF GREAT TALK RADIO

Andrew Wilkow is the newest and youngest member of the WABC air staff. Yes, he's in his very early 30's, but we don't want to reveal his real age because we don't want to come back and update this bio every year. He does speak a little bit of a different language than your typical WABC talk show host, but we think that's a good thing.

I like listening to him. He just goes into his explanation of why he's the next generation of talk radio too often.

It's kinda like "yeah, yeah, we get it, now back to the topic"

For the breaks:

From Jay Tea at Polipundit:
http://www.polipundit.com/

Here’s an interesting federal appeals decision regarding an ACLU lawsuit the national liberal media outlets not only failed to report but will not report even if their lives would depend on it {pun intended}:

In this case we are required to decide the constitutionality of Tennessee’s statute making available the purchase of automobile license plates with a ‘Choose Life’ inscription, but not making available the purchase of license plates with a ‘pro-choice’ or pro-abortion rights message.

{Gulp}

How do you think the court ruled on that issue, Patricia Ireland?

That’s right, the court upheld that Tennessee “Choose Life” license plates law:

Government can certainly speak out on public issues supported by a broad consensus, even though individuals have a First Amendment right not to express agreement. For instance, government can distribute pins that say ‘Register and Vote,’ issue postage stamps during World War II that say ‘Win the War,’ and sell license plates that say ‘Spay or Neuter Your Pets.’ Citizens clearly have the . . . right to oppose such widely-accepted views, but that right cannot conceivably require the government to distribute ‘Don’t Vote’ pins, to issue postage stamps in 1942 that say ‘Stop the War,’ or to sell license plates that say ‘Spaying or Neutering Your Pet is Cruel.’

* * *
[Invalidating] the Act in this case would effectively invalidate not only all those government specialty license plate provisions that involve a message that anyone might disagree with, but also effectively invalidate all manner of other long-accepted practices in the form of government-crafted messages disseminated by private volunteers. We are not provided with a sound legal basis for making that leap.

You agree with that reasoning, don’t you, Noam Chomsky?

* * *

BTW, the judge who wrote that decision is John Rogers. Circuit Judge Rogers was appointed by George W. Bush.

Go figure.

Here’s a link to the bio for Judge Rogers the gummint put together before he was confirmed and sworn into his position.

* * *

There were, of course, three judges on that panel.

The Reagan-appointed judge agreed with Judge Rogers and voted against the ACLU. On the other hand, the Carter-appointed judge dissented; he would have ruled that Tennessee law unconstitutional.

Go figure.

* * *

Last but not least, keep in mind George W. Bush has nearly three more years within which he can nominate judges for lifetime seats on the various federal appeals and trial courts.

You’re happy about that, aren’t you, Sullivan-Dershowitz?

Oh, right, never mind.

Moody's May Cut NYT Rating
– Ace
Cites Internet "event risk:"
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1002198733

Moody's Investors Service said Friday it may cut its rating of the New York Times Co.'s debt because of the company's weak cash flow, high financial leverage, and declining margins.
If that wasn't enough, Moody's said it is concerned about growing media competition, including the Internet, and what it calls ''event risk'' in the newspaper sector.

...

The New York Times Co.'s share buybacks over the last four years, debt-financed acquisition of About.com, and capital expenditures for its move into new headquarters ''leaves the company with a significant debt burden, heightened adjusted leverage, resulting in diminished financial flexibility,'' Moody's said.

And yet publisher Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., The Nepot Despot, just got a $1.6 million bonus.

Military: Operation Swarmer Shows Iraqi Troops Taking The Lead
– Ace
Good news:
http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=1738664

The U.S. military said on Friday a joint U.S.-Iraqi offensive marked a change in the fight against guerillas, showing Iraq's army was becoming increasingly effective and taking more control.
U.S. troop withdrawals from Iraq hinge on the capability of the Iraqi army, disbanded by U.S. authorities in 2003 and now being rapidly rebuilt, in the face of a raging insurgency and a surge in sectarian killings.

"(The operation) really marks a change and it marks an evolution," said a top U.S. commander, Lieutenant General Peter Chiarelli, adding Iraqi forces would control about 75 percent of the country by later this year, up from under 50 percent now.

"I think operations like 'Swarmer' are operations you're going to see more and more of … as we turn over more of the large urban areas to Iraqi forces," said Chiarelli.

"Had we tried to accomplish a mission like this 11 months ago, it would have been primarily U.S. forces. But in this case … we had primarily Iraqi forces," he said.

"I risk working for two years for nothing, just to be fired at any moment," said Paris student Coralie Huvet, 20, who had "No to the CPE" written on her forehead. Pointing to painted-on tears, she added: "That's depressing, that's why I'm crying."

Boo frickin' hoo.

You know what you can do to avoid this doom, Coralie?*
Give full value for your employer's money. Make yourself useful for a change.

Maybe if you had to work hard to keep your job you wouldn't have the energy to run around all night with your face painted like a mime-whore, throwing rocks at policemen.

A huge step backward for organized Labor, isn't it.
Good.

*Coralie surely knows her employer is itching to get rid of her.

UPDATE: Well, as many of you already know, the rioting has grown more widespread and violent.
I checked out Agence France-Presse and it isn't even on the front page.
You would think that when a European country is faced with a general strike because of labor law changes, that would be big news.

Unless, of course, there were unsavory rioters causing mayhem that might undermine their cause (Fnord).

Remembering Terri

One year ago today, Terri Schiavo’s feeding tube was pulled. Blogs for Terri is rounding up people’s memorable posts and current posts to remember the time last year when she was starved to death.

Honestly, I’m still sick, bitter from the whole thing, and I don’t want to open up old wounds. I’ll just post the links to a couple things I wrote that speak to the larger issue–specifically, how we look at the disabled, and generally, the value of human life in all its forms.
