A MAN detained by police for converting from Islam to Christianity could face the death penalty if he refused to become a Muslim again, an Afghani judge said today.
Islamic sharia law proposes the death sentence for Muslims who abandon the religion. Afghanistan's new constitution says "no law can be contrary to the sacred religion of Islam".
Supreme Court judge Ansarullah Mawlavizada said the suspect, Abdur Rahman, was arrested after members of his family informed police of his conversion.
He would be charged with abandoning Islam, Mr Mawlavizada said.
"The prosecutor says he should be executed on the basis of the constitution," Mr Mawlavizada said, who added that Mr Rahman could come back to Islam.
"If he does not ... he will be punished," he said.
Afghanistan is a conservative Islamic country and 99 per cent of its more than 25 million people are Muslim.
Several legal officials said they could not recall a previous prosecution for abandoning Islam in Afghanistan.
Wonder what the Koran says about infidels lying to Muslims? Yep, uh huh, I'll come back to Islam - whatever.
Sharia is all these people have ever known, poor things.
This is an abhorrent policy, rather like announcing a death penalty for Kareem Abdul Jabbar because he converted from Christianity.
Where are the Sufi Mystics, who would stand between the executioner and the prisoner, one after another. The death of one man is the death of the world entire.
How can you say that about the Religion of Peace? Islam is buried in the seventh century and always will be.
I wonder how many follow this Islamic faith because of fear of their lives. How many would convert from Islam or abandon it if they knew they would not be punished ?
May the Lord Crist bless and protect this man from harm.
May the Lord Christ bless and protect this man from harm.
Sorry about the spelling.
If only conversion to christianity does not mean death for muslims, we would have 50% of them getting converted.
Sorry about the spelling.
Your message came through just fine in spite of the typo. I echo your thoughts.
This is like the fourth or fith post about the same article since 9:00AM this morning.
While it may have been posted previously, it's the 1st time I've seen it.

I apologize. I searched for the article by the title before I posted it, and it wasn't listed.
I hate to laugh, but this is too much. Lol! Death sentence for leaving Islam? These psychopaths have a death sentence for EVERYBODY, what the hell is the difference what you do?
No need to apologize to me, I was just making an observation. I've noticed a number of duplicate posts over the past few weeks. Since I do read through the past news (page by page) I happen to notice these things. Regardless of the number of posts about this topic I think the man in the article needs our prayers right now. :)
These freakin' goat humpers just can't do it can they. They are 7th century zombies and apparently any attempts to change that are not possible. We should have carpet bombed both Afganistan and Iraq into parking lots and moved on.
LOL, believe Islam or else! Makes for a real sincere profession of faith, doesn't it? /s/
bbut, that's what the Shariah says MUST be done for all Muslimes who leave the great code of Mad Mo (p*ss be upon him) and Allla...... And I'm serious, that is what they are taught, it's a central tract of their religion, they MUST believe it and follow it. You can say christianity in the middle ages wasn't too kind to converts either, but it was never dictated in the NT to kill people who left the faith. The Isllamic sacred books tell exactly that.
Oh come on...
The title you've used is inaccurate. He's facing death because he strayed from Islam. Not because he converted to Christianity.
He could have converted to Buddhism and he'd face the same fate.
It's disingenuous to try to portray this as a slap against one religion.
It's a slap against humanity, not Christianity.
I apologize. I searched for the article by the title before I posted it, and it wasn't listed.
It appears to be the first post of this specific article therefore it is not, in my opinion, a duplicate. There are invariably a number of posts concerning interesting events. I think that is a Good Thing. One source may have a different angle, or even different facts available, than another.
The threadmeister didn't invent his own title -- "Man Faces Death Over Christianity" is the exact title of the Herald Sun article. Your beef is with the newspaper, not the poster.
