Plight Deepens for Black Men, Studies Warn [More black drop outs in prison than working]
NY Times Editorial ^ | March 20, 2006 | Erik Eckholm

Posted on 03/19/2006 9:12:59 PM PST by summer

BALTIMORE — Black men in the United States face a far more dire situation than is portrayed by common employment and education statistics,...

Focusing more closely than ever on the life patterns of young black men, the new studies, by experts at Columbia, Princeton, Harvard and other institutions, show that the huge pool of poorly educated black men are becoming ever more disconnected from the mainstream society, and to a far greater degree than comparable white or Hispanic men.

...These were among the recent findings:

The share of young black men without jobs has climbed relentlessly...dropouts....

Incarceration rates climbed in the 1990's and reached historic highs in the past few years....

In the inner cities, more than half of all black men do not finish high school.

...According to census data, there are about five million black men ages 20 to 39 in the United States.

Terrible schools, absent parents, racism, the decline in blue collar jobs and a subculture that glorifies swagger over work have all been cited as causes of the deepening ruin of black youths. ..

Joseph T. Jones, director of the fatherhood and work skills center here, puts the breakdown of families at the core.

"Many of these men grew up fatherless, and they never had good role models," said Mr. Jones, who overcame addiction and prison time. "No one around them knows how to navigate the mainstream society."...

All the negative trends are associated with poor schooling...

...Among black dropouts in their late 20's, more are in prison on a given day — 34 percent — than are working — 30 percent ......

In my MBA program, black women outnumbered black men by a considerable margin, the OPPOSITE of every other ethnic group.

Blacks are, to my knowledge, the only ethnic group in this country where female labor force participation is higher than that of males.

And people wonder why we see so many Hispanic laborers. The white guys got better jobs, and many (though not all) black guys are unavailable for those jobs.

True, but that doesn't answer the question as to why whites males, hispanic males, and Asian males participate in the labor force at considerably higher rates than black males.

The answer is simple:

Blacks Vote Democratic over 90% for race-baiting Liberal scumbag politicians.

And because they advocate being treated differently and dependent on society, they ironically ensure they will live on a segregated plantation as helpless slaves.

Anytime they decide to join a color-blind society and integrate like Italians, Chinese, Russians, etc. they will be indistinguishable and prosperous.

In a sub-society where blacks who study and get good grades are put down for "trying to be white"..where their "music" celebrates only suffering under the heel of the white man, fast money drug dealers and pimps -- with women as just bitches just for sex...

...where EVERY major black leader drums on, and on, about victim-hood as their only identity -- with demands for reparations as some kind of solution...and ANY Black that makes in the so called white world is called an Uncle Tom or House Ni***r....

....WHERE is the chance for the young blacks to believe that they can make it by working hard?

Bill Cosby is a lone voice screaming in a gale...and getting bashed for his efforts.

It was much this way 45 years ago when I became a teen -- and has only has gotten worse since the "Great Society" created a couple more generations of dependence on government and further destruction of the black family!

Sorry, I don't buy a word of it. As counter argument I offer the fact that males from other races have nothing like this kind of collective problem.

There's something else wrong here.

There just aren't a lot of average jobs anymore!

Sure there are. You just have to be willing to work. You can't expect to start out at $15.00 an hour. You have to believe that you can do better for yourself than the government can do FOR you.

No need to apologize for your comments at all. Anyone who took offense to them has built a wall of denial so high that it could use a good toppling. PC needs to be fall, too, if this is ever going to change.

"I was watching Extreme Makeover Home Edition tonight. It was about a fellow from Jamaica who lived in Florida. The poor guy has cancer bless his heart. His kids were very well spoken and very bright. None of them said "axed" or "see what I'm saying...It just struck me that for a change the "black kids" on this TV show tonight were extremely well spoken."

That's just the issue. When you meet blacks from the Caribbean or Africa who have come here, they often have very negative opinions of "native" blacks in this country. These immigrants work for what they have, offer no excuses, and generally do well for themselves.

The real problem is the lack of a father in many black families, and unfortunately the problem seems to be self perpetuating.

Throwing money at the situation won't make it better.

Folks with that 'gearhead' mindset would end up in some sort of machine shop or something involving steel. Not quite up to that level? Well, somebody needs to assemble Barbie dolls, right? Ah, but this is the 21st century! There are good jobs if you know technology and you job hasn't been outsourced to India yet

My customers are manufacturing plants here in the good ol' USA. They have plenty of "factory jobs" available-- their #1 complaint is the inability to find good solid workers who are not on drugs, and who want to show up dependably for work. I have seen it myself firsthand, many of those at the entry level are not thinking about working hard and getting ahead, they are busy figuring out how to do as little as possible, and skipping work.

There is plenty of opportunity in this country for the average Joe who wants to work.

Very sad--and we can thank the REVEREND Jackson and other black leaders for the victimology mentality that is part of this. From the article:

I believe a big problem with both black and white boys who end up in prison is the humility needed to start at the bottom. I go in to the prisons and I always wonder how they are going to deal with working entry-level jobs and having very little money. Many of them are obviously intelligent enough but more can barely read. The only way they'll stay out is a spiritual life IMHO.

...a subculture that glorifies swagger over work...

And promoted and glorified by the guilt-ridden white liberal elite.

My father, a technical engineer, and my husband, a maintenance engineer, managed to work their way into stable positions and then worked their way up the ladder. No one did this for them. They were not locked out of employment due to manufacturing overseas.

Every person mush find their own niche, to enable them to enjoy job security. My father's employment was always based upon the auto industry and how well they did. He traveled for twenty years, performing his job... providing a high standard of living for his family.

My husband first joined the Navy, served for over nine years, and then actively hunted down the best job for himself, even though it meant re-locating across the country.

Those people who will not actively pursue the highest dollar for work that they perform get no sympathy. You must work for YOURSELF and your future.

Conversely... African Americans do NOT consider blacks from the Caribbean to be "like them". They do discriminate.

To me, it is foolish. My grandparents were Canadian... were they "less caucasian" become they came from Ontario, instead of Boston?
