B for Bump
"and left unexplained is why "V" happened to have immediate access to one of the Grand Chancellor's underground torture chambers."
Ok I saw the movie and whomever told you this didnt understand the movie. The torture chamber was made by V and was NOT one of the Chancellor's. He states it in the movie. Its as plain as day.
I suggest either watching the movie again or having someone explain that scene to you.
On the political side....
Look ,the movie is entertainment. People are just pushing their own political views into it. I was very surprised that I wasnt offended after all the hype and I am VERY conservative.
Oh and yep, there was homosexuality in it, but it showed how NAZI-Like the government was by just killing them off or using them in expirements. V and Evie were not homosexuals.
Jeeze even the pedophile Bishop of the Church of England (I was astonished it wasnt a catholic priest after all the hype) wasnt homosexual. Still the moster deserved what he got.
I saw V for Vendetta in Imax in NYC and was a little bored, in fact depressed. This is a heavy heavy movie, not an exciting action flick. For the record the Upper West Side NYers clapped at the end of this movie, but I dont see it playing very well across America. Imax usually makes any movie 20% better in my book. in this case, it made the movie tolerable.
The over the top totalitarian society depicted is somewhere between that of George Orwell's 1984 and your typical LW moonbats current vision of America. I found zero resemblance to our current America, and in fact the London depicted in 2020 seemed much more like Soviet Russia circa 1980 or more accurately, Saddam Hussein's Iraq in the 80's and 90's, or Castro's Cuba.
The ending was pathetic and unbelievable, I wont get into it and spoil the anticlimatic ending, but it was just plain ridiculous. All of a sudden everything is better?! Yeah right. This was not the Matrix trilogy, the Matrix was entertaining.
The references to blowing up buildings as a legitimate method to affect change for an idea very unnerving. I dont think it played very well, and sensed the NY audience was uneasy with the blatant 9/11 references. I also think there was an intentional hit on memorials as propaganda devices. In fact one scene were the grand conspiracy is revealed is within a memorial to 100,000 dead, featuring a circle of dancing children. Subtle huh?
Any sex you ask? There was one gratutitous lipstick lesbian kissing scene to balance out the films closeted unattractive gay tv host, who has a secret art vault of banned items including a Koran and Maplethorpe graphic photographs. BTW, in this universe you get killed not for insulting the president in a comedy satire on television, but for owning a Koran.
The 9/11 conspiracy theorists will love this movie. THAT alone says a lot about V for Vendetta.
BTW
the best part of seeing thr movie was seeing the previews for Poseidon and Superman Returns in Imax.
Superman will be great and be a traditional good vs. evil family movie.
Because pagans were always kind to Christians.
Off to the The Wicker Man...
It's great that they are using the great original John Williams music for the new superman. That score is one of his very best.
The Watchmen was outstanding. I wonder if the movie coming out will even attempt it justice.
I thought the effects were lame, and expected more fight scenes. Boring.
The torture chambers were replicas inside V's secret Wayne Manor like home, mbuilt so he could test Evie. Stooopid.
I think that you've hit on the major problems with the movie version. That is, it appears that the directors have attempted to create a context that didn't appear in the comic books. One of the great things about the comic book is that V is always a disturbing hero. When you read the comic, you're never quite sure that you really sympathize with him at all. Or rather, you sympathize with his past, but can't quite get with his present and future. I also liked how the comic books were somewhat timeless, and weren't easily associated or identified with any current or past society even though the story was set in Britain. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I get the feeling I will be disappointed. I will probably wait til it comes out on DVD, or even until they show it on cable.
Which isn't true to the graphic novel. The original was set wholly in the UK, with no American characters and only a passing reference or two to the US.
Im psyched for Superman, hearing the actual marlon brandon Jor-El quote is sooo cool. The original superman was great in it's day with the limitations of 1978 special effects. This movie will be incredible. I expecte it to be far superior to Spiderman 2 which was a great movie from all angles. The preview shot of Superman floating in lower earth orbit contemplating the Earth was spectacular.
"Even though you've been raised as a human being you're not one of them. They can be a great people Kal-El if they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all their capacity for good, I have sent them you... my only son "
Makes me glad we went to see the OTHER movie released this weekend, "Find Me Guilty". Vin Diesel actually showed some acting ability in it, unlike, apparently, Pat-me Ami-half-dallah.
ROFL!
Just as an aside...I find the Burger King mask waaayyyy creepier than the Guy Fawkes mask from the movie.
The movie of The Watchmen has been halted. The director didn't think the budget was sufficient to do it justice.
I really can't see Watchmen being turned into a movie and retaining any of the book's genius. It'll get dumbed down like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
I got a thrill from that too. I actually think the original Superman film could be improved. It had its moments but was on the bland side. Hopefully this time they won't cast some other actor to play him as a teenage as they did back then.
