Tomorrow is primary day in Illinois and there are three races to watch. The first, and biggest, is the GOP primary for Governor which has essentially boiled down to a two person race between moderate Judy Baar Topinka and conservative Jim Oberweis.
Topinka is the only Republican currently holding statewide office (Treasurer) which demonstrates her appeal in a state where the GOP has basically been reduced to a smoldering heap of ruins. However, Topinka's longevity also has a downside; she has ties to the lowly-regarded Illinois political establishment and she served with former Governor George Ryan - who sits awaiting a jury verdict on his corruption trial at this very minute.
Oberweis, the multimillionaire dairy magnate and financial services manager, is a two-time loser for the GOP Senate nomination, most recently in 2004 when he made a name for himself - in a bad way - with an over the top anti-immigrant TV spot that had him flying in a helicopter over Soldier Field.
The last poll taken in the race showed Topinka leading Oberweis by 11 points (36 to 25), though that represented a loss of ground for Topinka from the month prior. Since that time, Topinka skipped the final debate held last week while calling her three male opponents "morons" (she later apologized) and has been battered by a sharp Oberweis ad that has footage of Topinka doing a polka with the now-disgraced George Ryan.
However, Oberweis has problems of his own, which include an alternative conservative candidate pulling double digits (State Senator Bill Brady, 15%) and a penchant for making himself look silly by daring his opponents to draw straws for the nomination and passing out coupons for free ice cream wherever he goes. Frankly, Oberweis would be more of a threat if he wasn't such a bad candidate. Be that as it may, Oberweis may have a good enough organization to make this one close.
In the eighth Congressional district, another Republican primary pits six candidates against each other for the privilege of taking on Melissa Bean in November. Bean is the woman who rather unceremoniously relieved Phil Crane of his seat two years ago, winning 52% of the vote in a heavily Republican district at the same time President Bush was thumping John Kerry by 16 points. The two leading contenders in the race are Dave McSweeney and Kathy Salvi, neither of whom have prior legislative experience. McSweeney has spent close to $2 million on the race already and, according to Lynn Sweet, the race has turned "nuclear negative" in the final days.
Last but by no means least, in Illinois 6 Democrats are squaring off in a bid to challenge for Henry Hyde's seat which comes open this year with the Congressman's retirement. The race is a litmus test for Rahm Emanuel's "fighting Dem" strategy, pitting Iraq war veteran and double leg amputee L. Tammy Duckworth against Christine Cegelis. Cegelis scored 44% of the vote against Hyde in 2004 and seemed in perfect position to capture the seat until Emanuel intervened, recruiting Duckworth - a political novice who does not live in the district - and pouring tons of money into the race on her behalf. This race should be close and will depend on whether voters take offense at the party elite's meddling or whether they take to the patriotic life story of Duckworth. We'll know the answer to that question tomorrow night.
I can't stand the political climate of Illinois. The GOP is useless as ever, and the Dumocrats are worse than ever. I wish my GF didn't like it here so much so I could move the f*** out! i wish I could got to Indiana or Missouri!
good luck in the Land of Lincoln there...
but I won't be holding my breath
Vote for Oberweis
Including you and me that's at least two votes he will get.
I hope he wins. Topinka is almost as bad as it gets.
Mine too, for the exact same reason.
He has my vote. I feel that stopping Topinka is even more important than stopping Blago.
Is there any difference between Topinka and any Democrat in the Chicagoland area? Besides the (R) that is.
Central Illinois is under a blizzard warning tonight and tomorrow.....my hubby is a Repub election judge here and doesn't expect much of a turnout....we are supposed to get 9ins here.....
BWAHAHAHAHA!!!
It's too bad Oberweis is an idiot. Topinka wins as three conservatives split the vote.
Vote oberwies, the worst thing that can possibly happen is Topinka wins the governors general election. Then theres no way any conservative candidate will have a chance til 2014.
I URGE ALL COOK COUNTY REPUBLICANS TO PICK A DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY BALLOT AND VOTE FOR CLAYPOOL.
The race for governor is over, no poll shows enough support for any candidate challenging the RINO Judy Barr Topinka. Forget the Governors race until the general election. JBT will beat Blago and it will be a small step up. NONE of the good conservative candidates will win the primary... don't waste your vote, and DO cast a vote in a race that matters. The County Board has much more effect on your day to day lives in Cook County than the Governor in Springfield does.
Gidwitz is NOT a conservative.
The governors race is NOT over. Remember December 2003, when the mouth from Vermont was supposed to have the Dem Presidential nomination in the bag.
Please don't give me this lose on principal nonsense either... we need to look at the reality of the situation and take what we can get. In another 8 or 12 years we might have a shot at a conservative winning the Governorship, but the GOP needs to rebuild in Illinois before that can happen.
Voting for Oberweis here. Wish I could vote for Brady (the downstater and NON-Chicago-an in the mix), but I want Topinka OUT more than I want Brady IN.
Normally that would keep the Dems from coming out to vote ;-).
I was going to vote for Oberweis too.
You should have seen the look on the election judge's face when I asked for a Democratic ballot. She knows me and was all set to hand me the Republican ballot. I explained the above logic to her and she agreed I had a point. She commisserated on the split of the conservative vote willl likely put JBT at the top of the primary - "I just don't like that woman" was her final comment. Getting rid of Stroger will have as much effect on your tax bill in Cook County as putting Oberweis in the governor's seat, and Claypool has a much better chance.
We need to take a victory where we can get it. JBT will be a marginally better Governor than Blago... Claypool will be much better than a corrupt Stroger. Vote the way the majority of freepers want, and it's Stroger re-elected from a hospital bed and Blago for 4 more years in Springfield (although JBT will beat him in the general election).
"Conservative" does not equal "Republican".
Especially not in Illinois.
The GOP at all costs is not my objective. And as far as I can tell, it is not the objective of Jim Robinson. Forrest Claypool is more conservative in his approach to government than most of the Illinois GOP, and I voted accordingly. Who knows? After a term as Cook County President, he might go forward to bigger things.
Right again, Conservative does not equal Republican. After looking at the Republican sample ballot, I found candidates who some Democrats are more to the right of. We need all the help we can get in this County and this State... I'll take it from whomever can give it (Dem or Pub).
(NONE of the good conservative candidates will win the primary... don't waste your vote)
WTF! With an attitude like this, no wonder the GOP is in trouble. This is the time to make our voices heard in Illinois, otherwise we will continue to get the leadership we deserve. It is our patriotic duty to vote and let our voices be heard, even in a losing effort. It still makes a big difference if Judy wins 90% to 10% vs 52% 48%. At least then she'll have to worry about conservatives staying home during the general election. Also, the gap is not so large that she can't be beaten in the primary. Remember that voters in the Republican primary tend to be more conservative than voters in the general election.
A loss is a loss. I wanted Ober. to win since he announced. It's clear he wont, and the important race that is close is Cook County Board President. With the snow downstate, and chances of one of the 3 conservatives beating JBT under perfect conditions already being slim to none... slim just left town.
