Repeatedly in the transcripts, Saddam and his lieutenants remind each other that Iraq destroyed its chemical and biological weapons in the early 1990s, and shut down those programs and the nuclear-bomb program, which had never produced a weapon.

Sounds like people who think they are being "bugged"

Exasperated, besieged by global pressure, Saddam Hussein and top aides searched for ways in the 1990s to prove to the world they'd given up banned weapons.

All Saddam had to do was to cooperate with the weapons inspectors, which was a prerequisite for our ceasing hostilities in the FIRST Gulf War. He didn't, and he got what he was promised.

Can you imagine what our country would be like if the MSM actually reported the news AS IS? Think how people would get along, how united we'd be.

If today's media were around during WWII, you'd be speaking German or you'd be a lamp shade or a bar of soap. < /Savage insight>

Man, this almost makes you feeeeeeel bad for poor old Saddam. What a load of crap.

How long will it be before Saddam is nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize?

They used to joke that Nixon on the WH transcripts while they were planning nefarious deeds -- "we could coverup X", once in a while one of them would inject "but that would BE WRONG"! Don't Saddam and co. deserve the same ridicule? The world is upside down.

"The factories will remain in our brains," one unidentified participant told Saddam at a meeting, apparently in the early 1990s.

I find this quote interesting. I just finished the book by General Georges Sada. One of the things he wrote in his book was that Saddam ordered the scientists who worked on WMDs to memorize all the work that was on paper, then burn the blueprints.

Or perhaps the locations would remain in their brains...

"I'd be curious to put this in context of who was at the meeting etc."

I bet you are on target. Context can make ALL the difference.

Remember Nixon saying not to cover-up, to publicly admit any mistakes (paraphrase). The MSM had no trouble interpreting that as phony. But Saddam Hussein, we have to believe.

Or, remember this media chestnut on Clinton?
"80% of the American people are opposed to impeachment."
The polling results looked something like this:
20% he should resign
20% said he should be censured
20% said he should be impeached
20% said he should leave office without his pension
20% said he should not be punished.

In other words, 80% wanted punishment, but reporting made it sound like 80% did not want punishment, the exact opposite! The MSM's willingness and power to mislead (and lie) is amazing.

Lesley Stahl on U.S. sanctions against Iraq: "We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that's more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?"

"Secretary of State Madeleine Albright: I think this is a very hard choice, but the price--we think the price is worth it."

I just read this story, that you sent me to...but I find the WRITER of the story, had an underlying premise that I don't think has been established yet..

The whole article was based on the FACT? that there were no WMDs...and hadn't been for years..

I don't believe that...am I wrong about the writer's premise?

No, you're right. They will do anything, say anything, to deny Iraq had WMD anytime after 2001.

Whew...thanks. Sometimes I wonder if I have missed some big story about the "proof" of no WMDS...

I even watched Duelfer in Senate hearings...and the press and Dem Senators seemed to hear differently than me...although Duelfer was sort of like David Kay...

TOO quick to write off the chance that a man that would bury jet planes, would NOT find some way to hide WMDs.

Because once they admit, even once, that there were "special equitpment"/chemical and biological weapons that were smuggled across the Syrian border by Russian spec ops, then the whole Left Wing's offensive against the Administration crumbles.

Possibly. Since we also have eyewitness accounts detailing how Saddam killed people who said things in meetings that he did not like, everyone in the room definitely took their cue from him. Heck the first thing the Baa-th party in Iraq did when they came to power was kill their political opposition.

This is my take on these transcripts, If early on in a meeting Saddam said there were no WMD, thats what everyone in the room said. Note in the above transcript I posted, they did not even want to talk about possessing WMD until Saddam had mentioned it. I did find an early audio transcript were they had basically agreed to never openly discuss WMD's. They were also worried about their nearby neighbors the Israeli's, who are legendary in their spying capabilities.

Slightly different title, which is why I didn't find it in the search--but at least that clears up the mystery. Thanks.
