BOSTON AD SKID CHILLS TIMES (12% revenue decline the worst of major newspaper groups)
NY POST ^ | 3/23/06 | KEITH J. KELLY

SULZBERGER No cutbacks.

The New York Times Company yesterday warned of a first-quarter slump, pinning the blame squarely on weak advertising business at the Boston Globe and other Times-owned papers in the region.

The warning came as company chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr. planned a trip to Boston next week, creating anxiety in the newsrooms of the Globe and other New England Newspaper Group papers.

The company had said last year that it planned to cut 500 jobs companywide, primarily in the fourth quarter of 2005 and the begining of 2006.

The warning was a "disaster," according to Ed Atorino, an analyst at Benchmark Inc. "The Boston Globe seems to be having some major problems in help wanted, retail, across the board."

Atorino said the group's 12 percent decline in February ad revenue was "probably the worst of any major newspaper group."

The Times said that job reductions will cost $8 million to $10 million in the first quarter that ends March 31.

They should follow the Chicago Trib's business model and run non-stop sob stories which blames the poor fate of these victims on the readership. There might be something to it since the Trib group is only losing its azz half as fast.

Dear New York Times Company,

Your advocacy and activism for the DemocRATS is costing you millions of dollars. You should have to report that to the FEC as an in-kind political donation.

BTW, bite the cheese, you losers.

There was no mention of the people who were evicted from their business by the NY Times under a ruthless Eminent Domain proceeding to make way for the construction of their new skyscraper and all the little people who will have their views obstructed.

Engineered by none other than the wildly unpopular Bruce Ratner (brother of the Hillary-legged Ellen Ratner).

We can rest assured that none of those they cut will be homosexuals, so...their percentage of gays at these papers is about to increase to even greater percentages. This will further distort their "news" gathering, make the papers even more flambuoyantly gay...and maybe...just maybe...in 3-5 years, if the trend continues, one or both of these just might go under!!!!

The Boston Globe has appeared skinnier and skinnier on the newsstands over the past few years. I have heard that, statistically, it is only Mass. cities that vote Left.

NYT bought the Globe quite a few years ago, wouldn't it be cool if they were forced to liquidate?

The big 5 Enroning, lying, spinning fishwraps had a great year in the financial polls this past year. Their stock value is down and going down like a cheap USSR submarine.
