MILWAUKEE, WI (AP) -- A sea of people filled the streets Thursday to protest legislative efforts that target undocumented workers.
Organizers said 30,000 people showed up for "A Day Without Latinos" demonstration, while police put the crowd at more than 10,000.
About 90 Latino-owned businesses on Milwaukee's south side were closed part or all the day to support of the protest, organizers said. About a dozen in Racine and Kenosha closed as several hundred people also protested in downtown Racine.
Among the issues, the protesters are against a bill that passed the House of Representatives in December that would make it a felony to be illegally in the United States. It would also impose new penalties on employers who hire them and would erect fencing along one-third of the U.S.-Mexican border.
Restaurant worker Juan Hernandez left his job with more than a dozen others to march at the rally. He said it was a matter of pride.
"We came to work not to be discriminated against," he said. "We want to be equal."
His boss gave them permission to leave the restaurant, which was closed for the first time ever, he said.
The demonstration began at Voces de la Frontera on the near south side and moved to Zeidler Park in downtown Milwaukee.
It is insanity that our government refuses to round up these criminals who are demanding special perks and the right to break our laws.

How many of the "Latinos" are there legally? As usual, there's no differentiation. It's the people that came into our country through other than a Port of Entry that are the problem.

I own my own business but I wonder how many employers would let their people off to rally FOR enforcement of immigration laws?

Milwaukee is still quite segregated. Those businesses were in the Latino part of town. They shut down their own part of the city! Out here in the whiter 'burbs, nothing happened. We just saw on our TVs that there was a protest over lunch.
Not a very effective protest if you ask me.

Exactly right. Calling it "A Day Without Latinos" is a slam against Latinos who are here fair and square.
"A Day Without Illegals" just wouldn't have had the same effect.
A few years after 9/11, and mass lawlessness in the streets is tolerated by the federal and state governments?
And as far as illegal aliens having the right to protest, I guess that means the Chinese Army could come onshore and protest against any attempt to repel their invasion. I mean, wouldn't that be discrimination as well?
If you buy Juan's definition of discrimination, it's discriminatory to have a country.

It was cold and windy today in Milwaukee, too bad it wasn't raining too. The police had to divert manpower to this march for illegals while also searching elsewhere for two missing boys.
Man! There are almost as many Mexican flags in that picture as I see here in San Diego on Mexican Independence Day! At least we know where the "Latinos" are from. The UN flag in the foreground adds the "humanitarian" touch.

Actually, Juan, you gave up your claims to "equal rights" when you decided you were more equal than the patient people, including your own countrymen, who apply to get in the front door legally.
The bar to get in here legally isn't all that high. We ask that you produce proof you aren't a criminal, a terrorist, someone here to suckle off the gubmint teat, work to destroy our county, aren't carring a communicable disease and will be self-supporting. Which of these do you find so objectionable?

President Bush has been great on most things except for our border.
He has been great on the war on terrorists.
But on the border he is a gross failure.
He acted fast and correct on the 3,000+ people murdered at the world trade center.

It should be made a felony for Criminals who overstay their visas and Invaders.
I believe we should give amnesty to these poor CRIMINALS or INVADERS.
This should be a 2 week amnesty to get the heck out of our Country.
The ones who ignore this amnesty should be buried in a tent city jail and fined $10,000 or buried elsewhere.
All aiders and abettors of these CRIMINALS or INVADERS should get 1 year in a tent city jail and a $10,000 fine for each CRIMINAL aided.

This is BS. We need people to immigrate to this country legally who will have their first loyalty to the USA and our own flag. If you want to be a Mexican loyalists you will have no trouble doing so in Mexico so get the hell out!!!!! All illegals, by definition, are criminals and should be deported instantly upon detection and every law enforcement officer in the USA should be constantly looking for them.

I think it is the part about suckling off the gubmint teat. About 60% of the illegals have less than a highschool education. And our immigration laws only allow for about 20,000 unskilled worker visas because at some point in the distant past our government had the wisdom to realize that ignorant unskilled workers almost inevitably will end up suckling on the taxpayers teat because they don't earn enough to pay enough taxes to cover things like educating their children at $8000 for each of their 4.5 average kids annually.
20,000 visas does however represent a pretty high hurdle when there are a million Mexicans who are willing to come annually and 40% of their entire population (the part that is still in Mexico) say they want to come. And that is before you count the rest of our Southern Hemisphere.

Scariest thing, IMO, is that the current Mayor of Milwaukee -- former Congressman Tom Barret appears to be leading the march in several of the Milwuakee Journal slideshow photos. Way to go Tom!
It's not ok for us to ever mention that the bulk of illegal aliens are from Mexico, yet apparently it's perfectly all right for them to wave their flag like the colonizers that they are.
Looks like we have a huge mob of Latinos trying to intimidate Congress. Rule by mob. They are implying there will be violence and mass disobedience if they are deported or if employer sanctions are instituted that leave them without a way to make money here.
