MILWAUKEE, WI (AP) -- A sea of people filled the streets Thursday to protest legislative efforts that target undocumented workers.
Organizers said 30,000 people showed up for "A Day Without Latinos" demonstration, while police put the crowd at more than 10,000.
About 90 Latino-owned businesses on Milwaukee's south side were closed part or all the day to support of the protest, organizers said. About a dozen in Racine and Kenosha closed as several hundred people also protested in downtown Racine.
Among the issues, the protesters are against a bill that passed the House of Representatives in December that would make it a felony to be illegally in the United States. It would also impose new penalties on employers who hire them and would erect fencing along one-third of the U.S.-Mexican border.
Restaurant worker Juan Hernandez left his job with more than a dozen others to march at the rally. He said it was a matter of pride.
"We came to work not to be discriminated against," he said. "We want to be equal."
His boss gave them permission to leave the restaurant, which was closed for the first time ever, he said.
The demonstration began at Voces de la Frontera on the near south side and moved to Zeidler Park in downtown Milwaukee.

Unfortunately the Milwaukee area is missing two young boys, and this damned protest took an amount of police officers from searching for those young kids.
You're absolutely right... I guess their protest, to them, was more inportant than the lives of two young boys.
Unfortunately, that is the usual case when these "protests" happen. There is nothing "peaceful" in the message of those protesters thugs.
I hope they find those two missing boys.
To see a bunch of aliens parading the Mexican flag on U.S. soil, and mixing it with the flag of the United States, is revolting.
Criminals from a foreign and hostile land demeaning our country and its flag, that's all it is.
You got your Mexican street lingo down pat. All this Aztlan crap means the Indians and semi-Indians (Mestizos) of Mexico feel they have the right to live and work anywhere in North America. And they will invade the United States. They prefer to live here since their stupidity, low morals and chaotic lifestyles ruined their birthplace.
I just cannot believe it. Which part of illegal does the media and elected political leaders not understand? I have nothing against someone wanting to join this great country of ours - but ENTER LEGALLY (by the laws and rules of the nation). SPEAK ENGLISH (the language of the nation that they want to enter so badly) and WORK HARD without hand outs (like the rest of the nation).
Go home and come back legally.

As an educator we at times get migrant workers that send their children to our school.
Last year one of those boys got into some mischief, and the mother was terrified that the police might be involved. I asked the administration if we knew if this family was here illegally and the response was, "We don't know, and we're not suppose to know."
I find this absolutely numbing. I am glad to help all who are in need of education, but to have our hands tied like this because of some idiotic policy is beyond my comprehension.
So does this mean the hospital emergency rooms were all freed up, The uninsured drivers were off the streets, and the people in Milwaukee didn't have to "press 1 for english" when they tried to do business over the phone?
That would be in the 'oh, gee...that makes sense!' category. A non-existent government agency standard.
