The main force that stops China from appropriating our new technology is the patent and copyright protection that is respected in the US, Europe, and the industrialized Asian countries. If China just steals technology or intellectual property, China can generally only sell the "stolen goods" inside China. We can stop them from stealing our technology and selling it outside of China.

As for when US companies would want to manufacture new tech products in China, that depends a lot on the amount of low-skilled assembly labor content in the products and where the products are in their product life cycle. Manufacturing of tech products with a lot of assembly content is more likely to be moved offshore to China or Mexico, as is manufacturing of mass-market products with low profit margins that are off patent. New products with higher prices and bigger profit margins are more likely to be made in the US, Japan, or Taiwan to ensure high quality and because ultra-low production costs are less important.

I'm starting to work on that Tech review. I've been too absorbed in trading energy stocks, metals stocks, and defense stocks lately. You got me back looking at tech again. There's always something new in the works in the the tech industry.

Thanks for the info. Figures the union would oppose them.

I'm kind of reviewing this thread (re the Chinese company that is apparently going to check for nuclear material in cargo coming thru the Bahamas----and do it for the US at a cost of $6 million per year). I noticed that one guy called you "clueless" for being against the Dubai ports deal. Just ignore him. I was against the Dubai ports deal and am against this Chinese deal. So were about 65-70% of Americans.

But, there are a group of people on here that think very highly of globalism and free trade. Maybe they are more knowledgeable than we are, I don't know. But, to me, common sense says you don't contract security-related matters to a company from a foreign country that you don't have a long-term, solid, trusting relationship with.

You two are just racist xenophobe protectionists for opposing this free trade. After all, Dubai does it! /sarc

He was ranting about it--I think it was in the NYSlimes--saying exactly the same things he was saying about the Dubai deal, but for some strange reason, no one else seems to be reporting about it.

Perhaps he's just not being quite as vociferous because he's finally realized many of us have seen through his antics! Or, perhaps, the media have realized the majority of Americans are tired of hearing Schumer's bought and paid for bashing of foreign investors.

Do people honestly believe there were no deals like this during the Clinton regime??? or that there would be none, heaven forbid, during any subsequent Democrat regime?? Please, the Dims are willing to take CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS from the ChiComs---and to make the solicitation calls from the White House, no less!!

There are things I don't particularly like about "global trade and investment" either, but there really isn't any way to control what other countries do with their ports unless we're willing to invade every country on the planet--as some other poster has already pointed out!!!

You have, very eloquently, nailed it. The MSM has struck again, and from the sounds of it, they've hit another homer.

P.S. Love your tag-line! Great play on words--and this poem is a personal favorite "bit of lit".

From my experience, Noory doesn't need an excuse to "go crazy"! This guy has it all---everything from soup to nuts(NUTS, particularly)--invaders from outer space to conspiracies of "inner Earth dwellers"!!! (Does anyone really take this guy seriously?)

My guess is, if an entire container or a large portion thereof is shielded, the container would be seized. I'm sure that is standard op if containers are being scanned. I know that's the case in airports. If screeners can't determine what an object is, they search the entire suitcase.

More plainly stated: Probably the most serious impediment to U.S port security is the American Labor Unions.

Thnx, I really like that poem too. My favorite line is "For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore." That tells you how much Poe must have adored Lenore. Here is a downloadable pet raven:

I do think though that this issue can be easily eliminated by the Bush Administration. All they have to do is announce that they're deploying a few US customs agents to supervise the workers who are running the scanner. After that, it's checkmate against the MSM and case closed.
