SAN FRANCISCO - Paul A. Flaherty, a computer engineer who helped create the pioneering AltaVista online search engine, has died. He was 42.
Flaherty died March 16 of a heart attack at his home in Belmont, about 20 miles south of San Francisco, family members said Friday.
Flaherty came up with the idea of indexing Web pages that made the AltaVista search engine one of the most popular Internet search tools in the mid-1990s.

That's hard. So young.
Lost my big sis in her forties, two years ago...so I know.
You and your family are in my prayers.
To: Last Dakotan
May GOD be with you and your family.
He did a good job as an engineer.

Terrible news. He was a gifted engineer and a sharp wit here on FR. Many of my fellow computer engineers seem to be dying in their 40's. Makes me wonder if the stress of perpetual deadlines is contributing to an early demise. My database admin passed on at age 44. He was the fittest person imaginable.

So sorry to hear this.
I remember well using Alta Vista and thought it was the neatest thing.
To: Last Dakotan
I remember using Alta Vista way back when because Yahoo just didn't do it for me.
I think they were also responsible for my first big webpage jumping 1000 hits in one day (after getting 1000 hits over the first couple of months).

Condolences to you and your family on the passing of your brother. 42 seems all too young, especially for a heart attack. Not many people leave such an important legacy behind to be remembered by.
