WASHINGTON (AFP) - Former US president Jimmy Carter criticized Washington's civilian nuclear deal with India, saying it was "just one more step in opening a Pandora's box of nuclear proliferation."
"Knowing for more than three decades of Indian leaders' nuclear ambitions, I and all other presidents included them in a consistent policy: no sales of civilian nuclear technology or uncontrolled fuel to any country that refused to sign the NPT," Carter said in an opinion piece in The Washington Post.
India has refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and developed nuclear weapons on its own.
US President George W. Bush clinched the landmark nuclear deal with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during a visit to New Delhi on March 2 and is pushing Congress to amend the US Atomic Energy Act, which currently prohibits nuclear sales to non NPT signatories, to make the agreement effective.
It would give energy-starved India access to long-denied civilian nuclear technology in return for placing a majority of its civilian nuclear reactors under international inspection.
Carter, a Democrat, slammed the Bush administration for abandoning many of the nuclear arms control agreements negotiated since the administration of Dwight Eisenhower.

Carter continues spew his anti-American crap.
So, Carter is all against us working with our allies, but he wants us to bend over backwards for our enemies.. yea.. liberal hero..
Please, GOD, put Carter out of his misery.....
And save the USA in doing so.
Yeah,so?
There - I fixed the headline to make it more accurate.
India did not sign your deal and developed weapons anyways. Now you complain about helping India with Nuclear energy plants. Great job Peanuthead, you are a moron beyond belief.
I bet Jimmah would be all for us giving nukes to Pakistan though..
Ok. Jimma. India has nukes all ready. This brings their Nuke program into the International Regulatory web. So the reality is 180% the opposed of what you said. Sit down and shut up you senile old moron.
Did someone slam a door on Carter's head? I'm seriously worried about the guy. Perhaps his caretakers should think of placing him somewhere where he won't hurt himself.
Jimmy Carter knows all about nuclear proliferation, having done his best to see to it that NKorea could develop the bomb!
Shut up you crepuscular old fart.
I guess Carter missed the big boom coming from India... But what really make Jimma an total moroon (a little Bugs Bunny lingo) is the fact India has a FUSION bomb (or H-bomb)!! The US just can't stick its head in the sand a pretend it doesn't have the bomb.
You can read Carter's criticism of an issue as almost like a "Good Housekeeping" seal of approval. conversely, you should his praise for something (like elections in Venezuela) like the skull & crossbones poison symbol.
If India were an Islamist country Jimmah would enthusiastically support the deal.
Yet Jimmy was all for the North Korea deal...and negotiated to get it back on track after it became apparent we were suckered by liars.
Yup...and if a dictatorship too, he would be orgasmic with glee.
Or a communist country.
Yeah right. Jimmy Carter knows how to deal with nations in southern Asia. What a putz. Worst president since Buchanan and the most sanctimonious one in our history.
His wife's no "trip to Paris" either.
I must thank Carter. I don't know a human being who is as consistently wrong on everything. It makes it so easy to know what is the right thing to do. Just do the opposite of what Jimmy wants. It comes in handy for some decisions that are a close call such as the port deal.
Carter's new code name ......... BOZO
thanks Jimmy, what a freak..
Someone needs to tell Jimmah!(not that it would do any good) that it was his failure to help the Shah of Iran that has made the present situation necessary. He's still parading around the world trying to reframe his presidency as something other than an abject failure. It was shortly after he kissed the evil Brezhnev on the cheek, demonstrating to the soviets that they had nothing to fear from Jimmah!'s America, that they invaded Afghanistan and started the civil war that led to the Taliban...
Jimmah! is to U.S. security what the Titanic was to White Star Line's safety record.
So we can see how effectifve the NPT was in stopping them from getting the bomb. How about your buddies in North Korea, Jimmy?
What an idiot!
Can one day go by when an ex-Democrat President doesn't attack the current President's policies? I don't recall George H.W. Bush or Gerald Ford speaking out against Bill Clinton while he was in office. But then again, rules and decorum are for Republicans. Democrats do any damn thing they please and the Media laps it up like kittens on spilled milk.
Once more, Jimmy Carter demonstrates the bizarre tendency of the liberal mind to invent evil where none exists while remaining completely oblivious to real evil that threatens our security. Undoubtedly, the U.S. President with the worst judgment in the history of our nation in my opinion.
So many comments, so little bandwidth.
Lord God, it would be very nice if you could permanently slam this traitor's mouth shut and bring to a screeching halt any and all public pontifications on his part.
I think I could even handle it if he got lost wandering incoherently in a big vat of peanut butter.
Carter's is the funeral that I look forward to with glee.
meanwhile jimmmy the disgrace will blast others for global warming and not using alternative energy sources...
carter has to love this- his presidency was a complete failure, everyone considered him an afterthought and now, in spewing his venom against this President he has become the darling of the media...
Criticizes, Mocks, Bashes, Ridicules, Dislikes, Argues Against, etc.
Hyperbole journalism is now the norm. Anyone who criticizes something, its a slam no matter how weak or strong their argument.
I'm comfortable leaving the timing of that fate to The Lord.
But I sure want him and Shrillery and ScubaTeddy and Byrdbrain and Boxerface . . . out of public life ASAP.
Once again, Carter doesnt know how to deal with Iran. This is all about gaining an ally against Iran, as well as providing them a model positive incentive (open inspections deal) should their government (miraculously) change.
Where's the quotes from Carter about WHAT IRAN HAS DONE to accelarate proliferation over there? Huh? Where are they Jimmy?
Despite this, no one should look forward to a US President's funeral "with glee". That's sick. Oppose his views but respect his person and former office.
Oh Lord, here we go again.
Jimmy: SHUT UP.
Bttt
The peanut farter needs to crawl in a hole someplace and clam up.
Hmmm... So are you capable of perhaps countering those comments with a little more bandwidth of your own? Or is your statement supposed to say it all?
Carter is such a mindless DNC robot that GWB could announce he is switching his party affiliation to the Democrats and Carter would issue a press release saying it is politically motivated and would cost millions of innocent lives.
Endorsing your sentiment!
It is, of course, unacceptable for anyone here to make even an oblique suggestion of any human agency in the termination of this idiot who just will not ever shut his self-righteous, know-all mouth. But, what God eventually will do, is something that we can all look forward to.
(When it happens, there will be the inevitable thread sending up prayers and speaking respectfully. I will not be on that thread. I will be partying.)
Jimmah Carter ... worst president ever. Unfortunately, once he's gone, Algore will fill this "slam whatever the Republicans do" role and become the media darling. And Algore may be more unhinged than Jimmah (if that's possible).
I'm sorry that this may be a repeat of another post but wasn't Carter involved in selling nuke material to NK and technology to China?????
NK yes but not sure about China.
No doubt another gem from the master of foreign policy.
Jimmy Carter can kiss my grits.
Thank heaven for Jimmy Carter. Were it not for his foreign policy "expertise," we might not have gotten Reagan elected in the first place.
