Bill Clinton Hoping for Billions in Pledges for His Charity

Former President Clinton's attempt to marshal the resources of the world's wealthy and influential to solve global problems resulted in $2.5 billion in pledges during a signature conference held last year.

This year, he wants even more.

On Friday, the former president planned to unveil details of the 2006 Clinton Global Initiative and discuss progress on commitments from the September 2005 gathering.

"I was astounded by the number of people who have been spurred to action by CGI," Clinton said in written statements Thursday. "People really want to help, and now that many people know what CGI is and what we're trying to do, we're hoping for even greater success this year."

Clinton spokesman Jay Carson said there had been good progress on the commitments from last year, which kept coming in even after the three-day conference ended.

Some pledge-makers have had problems fulfilling their commitments, but there is still time for them to come through, Carson said. He wouldn't name those who were struggling but said Clinton's staff was helping them find ways to meet their pledges.

This year's gathering is set for Sept. 20-22 in New York with a focus on poverty, public health, energy and religious conflict. Microsoft founder Bill Gates, investor Warren Buffett and French President Jacques Chirac are among those expected to attend.

The 2005 session drew about 800 people at $15,000 a head.

Some of the more than 300 plans that resulted from that session:

BJ hired a bunch of his pal Kofi Annan's accountants who lost their jobs when the oil-for-food program was shut down.

Can you envision Bubba on the bridge of the Enterprise getting Scotty on the blower for more warp speed? No? How about Bubba in sick bay banging Gene's girlfriend the nurse?

Actually this is great news. The cash they collect, including most of what they skim their part off ther top, will not be put into play against America. We need more things like this so the resources of the loony left will be wasted on elitist garbage run by elitist thieves like Bubba.

My guess is that BJ got to Thailand and realized that one of the major industries there was prostitution, so he figured that he would personally give the "working girls" some relief money.
