Dean Says Bush 'Scapegoating' Hispanics

By SCOTT LINDLAW, Associated Press Writer 11 minutes ago

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean charged Friday that President Bush was exploiting the debate over immigration laws for political gain, "scapegoating" Hispanics with an eye to this year's elections.

Dean skipped over the fact that he and Bush agree on the legislation at the heart of the debate. Both support a Senate bill that would expand guest-worker programs for an estimated 400,000 immigrants each year.

At a speech in an Oakland union hall, the 2004 presidential candidate sought to tie Bush to a much tougher House bill that would tighten borders and make it a crime to be in the United States illegally or to offer aid to illegal immigrants. Bush does not back this bill.

"This is a nonsensical proposal put out by far right-wingers in the Republican Party who have been endorsed for re-election by the president of the United States," Dean said. "The president has a moral obligation to rein in the right-wing extremists in his party and stop this divisive rhetoric about immigrants."

Dean devoted much of his short speech here to the immigration debate, which has taken center stage in Washington this election year and touched off mass demonstrations elsewhere. More than 500,000 immigration-rights activists marched in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, largely to protest the House measure.

Bush has spent much of his career courting Hispanic voters, the nation's fastest-growing voting bloc, and he has helped double the GOP's share of the Hispanic vote since 2000.

Nevertheless, Dean accused Bush and fellow Republicans of demagoguery in the immigration debate, saying it fit with a long-standing pattern. He cited the president's opposition to the University of Michigan's affirmative-action program and Bush's decision to "pick on" homosexuals —

I don't recall the bill that approved voting rights to illegals.... oh, never mind.

Damn! Dean figured it out! (rolling eyes)

I'm not sure how deep Bush's (or Dean's for that matter) support for the Judiciary committee is, he hasn't said.

Is Dean's idea to ignore the issue or just simply open the borders?

It is still early in the 2006 election cycle.

Those alleged Republicans who continue to favor "amnesty" (in it's many flavors) are handing a great campaign issue to their opponents in the primaries.

Forget about the Democrats, if you favor amnesty, you will soon have real Republicans running against you and you will have furnished them most of their ammunition.

Enough is enough!

Looks like Dean missed the part where Bush praised the Supreme Court for upholding most of Michigan's racial prefence scheme.

Wow! What a weekend of choices for Dean and his liberals - they can march with the illegals or go to New Orleans and march with Je$$e as he tries to recreate Selma.

Wow! Which group does the Democrat party pander to - tough choice as both groups fight for "favored minority status."

Exactly, the republicans find themeslves on the losing end this election if they don't kill any bill attached to a guest worker program. Any opponent will use it against them and win and they can start looking for another job. Lindsey Graham I hope will be the first to go along with McCain.

Hahahahahahahaaaa!!!!!!

Seriously, the kooks believe this. And Dean is their Leader.

The President is NOT with the GOP base on this. The President is NOT with the Majority of the public on this. Which, is fine, if he believes he's right. No one should ride to the Majority's opinion if they really believe the Majority is wrong. In this instance I do NOT believe the Majority is wrong. But let's be honest here Deaniac, you can't paint the President has a hard liner on our borders. Even you would have a tough job selling that to yourself. How long did you have to practice this little speech Howard?

Far as I can tell the Libs will lie about the President's position. Hispanics/Minority of Americans for amnesty don't think he's going far enough. Legal Immigrants are outraged they respected our laws, and those who did not will be rewarded including LEGAL Hispanics. The Majority of Americans are either upset because of a) security b)preservation of American culture or c) Disrespect of our laws.

The President isn't benefiting from this discussion Howie, and he isn't scapegoating Hispanics Howie, so zip it.

Actually if we want to be serious for a moment Howie and his Liberal friends are upset because the President and some Republicans are for amnesty, so in front for amnesty, that they are diluting the Libs/MSM's attempts to feature Republicans en masse as racist. In an odd way the Prez and certain Reps being out for amnesty is protecting those Reps for border enforcement from being pigeon holed as racists. Which is turning the discussion more onto the subject of border enforcement, rather then the Libs historical preference. Race baiting.

I do not think it's a deliberate strategy by the Prez and GOP, I am not one of those that runs about claiming Karl Rove orchetrates the timing of the sunrise. But, yeah, the effect of a few Reps breaking off for amnesty is actually keeping the subject on border enforcement ironically. Does that mean it's helpful in the long run? Well, no, not necessarily, because the objective is stronger border enforcement and these breakaways are clearly committed against at this time. However, as a result members like J.D. Hayworth aren't going to be labeled as bigots and have it stick, either.

IMO, this isn't going quite the way the Dems hoped it would.

People are going after the wrong enemy with Bush.

They are going after Bush instead of radical traitors called democrats.

Conservatives that don't think their is a difference between dean, pelosi, conyers and bush are going to cause great harm to this nation.

Bush might not be perfect but he is not the lesser of two evils compared to the absolute filth of the dems.

He is far better than them.
