55 Square mile area affected in Charleston SC by Water Main Break
Breaking news on tv | 03/31/06 | Dixie Sass

The break is at Turkey Creek. The 48 inch pipe is over the marsh and no ones knows how it happened.

This comes at the time when we have The Cooper River Bridge Run, the Azalea Festival, the Cajun Festival, and a few other high profile events happening.

No, they aren't even thinking of that. The break is spectacular! The water shooting out of the pipes looks one of the fountains in Rome or Paris!

This has effected all the businesses in the area. This covers a three county area. Restaurants can't cook and serve, fire departments can't fight fires. It's a mess!

Hanahan, SC - A water main at the Hanahan Water Treatment Plant has broken. This is the largest plant in the state of South Carolina.

At present, Charleston Water Systems has not issued a boiled water advisory. However, they advise that all customers with trickling water turn it off and boil their water.

As of 10:00 p.m., CWS is not aware how long this break will take to repair. It could take all night. The break is affecting customers on the Charleston Pennisula, West Ashley, parts of Ladson, the North Area, and as far as Ladson.

One of the hospitals has been without water since 8:30 and has gone to an emergency surgery plan. Another was out for awhile.

42,000 people are expected to take part in the Bridge Run. We have people in from all over the world for this.

They are recommending it, but haven't issued the advisement yet. Most probably won't hear much from DHEC until they have water flowing again.

Here is more:

Snippet:
Burky says there was a break on a 48-inch line and officials were working to isolate it and send the water in another direction. The Charleston Water System serves nearly 400,000 people in the region.

They've been doing live shots from site, people from all over the tri-county area are out "sightseeing" at the site.

It's something else!

Water is sold out at all of the stores, lol, the water for the Bridge Run is now under guard. Lol.

Advisement is out to boil the water.

BTW, I can't stand my water company. My district just increased my water bill and it is the highest utility I have....higher than gas, electric, cable, and internet.
